Default 2001 oil pump

I am looking at buying a 2001 ranger. I don't know the engine until I go look at it in a couple hours. (4 cylinder but the guy does not know if its a 2.3 or 2.5)

The description the guy has states "oil pump is out so you can't start it it went out when I pulled in work and I killed it haven't started since wasn't knocking yet so when you buy it you won't be able to start it without blowing motor"

From my research a lot of times this is actually the oil sending unit. Is this true for the 2001 models? I am thinking he saw the oil pressure drop to 0 and assumed pump but i don't know for sure yet.

The only reason I've seen a 1995-2001 2.5 pump go bad is if it is leaking (pressure is still good).

It's a good chance that the sensor is just bad (unless it is just super low on oil and caused the bearing clearances to open up).

If they guy can't tell if it's a 2.3 or 2.5 then he probably doesn't know a good or bad oil pump and is just going by the idiot gauge.

ask if its 8 or 4 spark plugs (2.5 is 8 plugs)

The 2.5 is easy to replace (once you pull the timing belt off).

He did say it has 8 spark plugs. I did not know that the later 2.3L ones only had 4 plugs.

8 spark plugs is the 2.5 lima block.

Mid year 2001 they switched to the 2.3 Duratec (DOHC and aluminum block and head).

----------

How many miles and how much is he asking? Condition, beside "bad pump"?

----------

Ok so I found the post on CL of the truck you are talking about.

I would see if you could get him down pretty low. Buy it and just drive off around the corner or whatever and replace the sensor and see (be easier if guy doesn't see you if everything works fine). If you get no pressure get a pump and tow it home.

But for only 138k miles I doubt that pump is bad.

Got it. Was stupid/brave enough to start it up and the oil pressure came right up. I've driven it about 10 miles so far and it seems fine so it is definitely the sending unit.

Hell yeah.

So you bought it from him and just said what the hell? Talk him down?
