The SOHC 2.3 and 2.0 made back then are non interference. The DOHC 2.3 from 2001 on will self destruct if a timing chain breaks.

Awesome, I was wondering because I just slapped a set of pistons in mine and the pistons had valve reliefs cut into them. Thanks.

I know this is an old post, but just for the record. My timing belt broke last week (01-2.5L SOHC) and in the process of repairing it i learned the following:
There are two markings on on the Cam shaft timing gear belt guide and two on the oil pump timing gear belt guide, an arrow and a diamond.
The cam gear should be set using the arrow to the arrow on the inner timing belt cover.
The oil gear should be set using the diamond to the diamond on the inner timing belt cover.

I know why Ford would do that, but caused me grief for 3 days and I stopped counting the # of times I open that sucker up.

After finally realizing the above and reset everything, it started right up, except for the loud clanking noise mention earlier in this post. Oil pressure was good, its a non interference motor should nothing should have broken. Figured if its busted nothing to loose. I let it run for a few minutes then began to rev the motor a little higher. Good Grief the noise just stopped????

it's been a few days and still quiet.

Regarding Idle, my was irractic for a few days (probably because I disconnected the battery). But now it idles fine.

Just some feedback for the next guy who needs more info.
