Default Check Engine Light

my check engine light went on today I checked with my Actron OBD II reader and it came up with error code P1432. I looked it up and found that it is the Thermostat Heat Control. Anyone know how to fix this problem?? what are my options and how much does a new one cost roughly??

Replace the electronic thermostat. Most likely the problem. Gonna be about 100 dollars.

RockAuto usually stocks the OEM unit ($130) coupons can be found with a little searching.

Used is nice too (lots of different cars use the same P/N) if you've access to a junk yard close.

The failure seems to be that one of the embedded sensors get hot and either commits suicide or jacks-up the connector (it's worth looking at the connector to see if you can just clean it, but I've not often seen that work).

Thermostat Housing — 2.3L
Removal and Installation

NOTE: The thermostat and thermostat housing are serviced as an assembly.

1.Drain the cooling system.

2.Disconnect the hose and the electrical connector.

3.Disconnect the radiator lower hose.

4.Remove the bolts and the thermostat housing.

5.To install, reverse the removal procedure.

THANKS guys...will look into this, how important is this thermostat to run the car smoothly and safely? Does this thermostat tell me temperature on the dashboard?

thermostats are not hard to replace, It really helps when someone shows you how. I did it in my autotech class. It was pretty easy. I don't think its worth 100 dollars to fix. But mechanics like to get money, and they probally know they can get it.

But good luck getting it fixed.

The t-stat controls the flow of coolant - water pump is jsut a pump, and operates anytime the crank is spinning; the t-stat is a valve that will shut (or open) to allow hot engine coolant to flowout into the radiator where the coolant temperature is reduced, prior to being drawn back into the engine (by the waterpump)

In your ranger, the coolant temperature in the block is used for fuel and some transmission calculations. A t-stat that allows too much flow will cause the engine to (possibly) run too cool, keeping the fuel mixture in a richer portion of the fuel maps affecting timming and injector pulse-width -- this has the effect of dropping extra fuel, reducing your mileage, reducing power, and contributing to fuel contamination in your lubricating system... A Tstat that runs too hot will also cause performance issues as the ECU will compensate by reducing timing advance and dropping output power with the extreme condition being an engine overheat with associated failures...

The electronice t-stat on your 2.3 is usually "operating" ok; the failure piece is one of the integrated sensors (letting the ECU know that the t-stat is working OK)... Sadly the ECU will assume that it's data is correct and operate your engine using some different (default) data parameters, which'll prolly leave you with reduce perfomance (mileage, power, or both).

So kinda, that's what you Tstat does -- just "sets" the temperature at which the engine operates -- and in the electronic t-stats, there's an additional sensor feedback loop to the ECU (likely what's failed on yours), which'll cause some other issues.
