Arrow which motor?

My 83 ranger currently has what seems to be the 2.9 based on the belts etc. It's tied to a five speed tranny. This is my trail rig but i like how quiet it is and doesn't chug fuel. I don't like the lack of power so if you had some cash which 4 or 6 cylinder fuel injected engine would you buy to mate to my tranny? Please base it on factory performance, easy swap, and aftermarket parts, as well as easy to fix. this will help me search craigslist for i do not know enough about the little truck and engines going with.

i dont know how easy it would be to install but the 4.0 is a nice motor with descent power

If your 83 is stock, probably a 2.8.
2.9 is injected and came out in 86.
I think you are probably carbureted meaning, going to an injected is more work.

This is what you can expect.

I want something quiet and a gas sipper. Also want to stay as beleivable as possible with originality. I see too many 302 swaps. this is a street driven trail rig so the fuel injection is important.

302 is the way to go. More power less cost. and if you dont mash the pedal all the time the mpg will not be to far different than the FI 4.0
