Default 2.5 runs BAD

Ok... I have a problem that I'm having a heckuva hard time getting to the bottom of.

Got an '01 ranger with 170k miles that had a bad radiator, and had been badly overheated. I re-did the block including a bore/hone, align hone, decked the block and used a new head. Redid the valves etc etc.

The engine runs great over around 1700rpm, below that, it misses pretty badly.

About 50% of the time, the engine cranks normal, and starts right up. The other 50% of the time it cranks hard. It'll make about one rotation, then come to an abrupt stop, then struggle to rotate again. If you floor it, it cranks a little better and will usually start. To me, it cranks like an engine with way too much ignition timing.

I have a check engine light on - it reads an EGR fault and sometimes says there is a misfire on #4.

I've got a new battery, starter checks good, EGR valve is clean and seems to function fine using my mouth to suck it open/closed. Leakdown on the engine is about 5%, so the bottom end is good. I've got fresh plugs and wires, and I just tested the injectors on a test bench - all good.

Anyone have any advice??? I'm all ears!

I would say re-check your base timing. Make sure the cam/s are set right and that you are not 180 out.

check for cracks in the ignition coil(s) if they are cracked, change the coils i dont think this is the cause of your trouble starting but it sure will help your low end power, and might help starting
