Default clean inside of engine

We have a one owner ford ranger, i think it is a 2006. Anyway, it finally landed in my lap as my primary vehicle and I would like to clean it and keep it clean. the check engine light is on and has been on for a few years. the mechanic said it was nothing pertinant when i had it in the shop for some thing. Anyway, I have noticed all these commercials for some oil to keep your engine clean. But Mike Rowe was in one commercial with gunk on his finger and he couldn't get it off. What can i do to clean my engine on the inside if this gunk is present? Then what kind of oil do I use to keep it clean? Also, I am looking into changing the fuel filter, do I use fuel conditioner before or after I change the fuel filter?

Stay away from those products

Running seafoam through the engine will help. You can buy it at auto parts stores.

You run some through the gas tank some through the crank case (pour in where you add oil) and then some through the brake booster.

Brake booster is the line marked in red
