Default Oil gauge works when it wants to

New here and have a question. I have a 99 Ranger Sport that is used mostly for parts running and puttering around town with. It has the 4 banger, stick shift. I bought it a few months ago to help save on gas. Two other trucks are diesel work trucks and only get 11mpg. So far the Ranger is getting over 20 so I am happy with that.

The question is that the oil pressure gauge on the dash quit working properly a few weeks ago. When starting the engine cold it does not work. When the engine gets up to operating temp then it will jump up to half way up and stays there untill the engine is stopped. As long as the engine is warm it will work, but never moves from half way. Any ideas.

Another question is, where is the pressure switch on the engine. I have looked all over for it with no luck. I was going to put a brass tee and an aftermarket gauge mounted on the dash somewhere.

Other than that the truck runs great and fun to drive compared to the 8500# 1 ton chevy work turck.

I believe the oil gauge is connected to a switch, not a sensor. So essentially you are looking at a dummy light.

yeah it only really says if you have pressure or not, mine does the same thing, i think i need to clean mine, the switch is probably just sticking.

Thanks for the info. Where is the switch that controls the gauge? It has to be on the engine block somewhere to that would connected to an oil galley to read pressure. I bought a so called service manual from Haynes and it is useless.
