take the air muffler out of the filter box and call it a day. the air you get into the motor from the stock system is as cold as you'll get from any product like k&n or others.

take the air filter out and look at the lower box that the filter sits in. the air muffler is the tube that comes out of the front of the box with a little effort you can pop that out and open things up.
some swear that it will help the engine breathe better? who really knows but it will give the truck that throaty sound when you get on the skinny pedal

this is called a air muffler never herd it called this and you are right if you either make the tube bigger or just remove it it will give you a 7.38" of an inch more cfm but its no colder than stock just more flow and as for after market they only give you about 4"to 8" more cfm so if you do a drop in high flow air cleaner like k&n or AMI or one of the others you can save big money and get the same result

I put a K&N 77-2529KP on my 02 4.0 SOHC about 6 years ago, have cleaned and re-oiled it yearly since. It may have a little more HP, but the mileage jumped a mile to the gallon, and the exhaust job increased it another .5+ mpg.
If anyone is interested in something that works, but ain't pretty at all, I posted a system I built for my 86 B 2 2.9. That made a world of difference.
http://www.fordrangerforum.com/6-cyl...ormance-2.html. Way down the page.
Have a look, but its not pretty, just functional.

Yes it will, if you stretch it out and use the stuff with the wire in it, this is aluminum, that has not been stretched. That piece is 10' so the package says, and I didn't stretch it at all, just made the bend up to the Spee-d Basin.
By not stretching it out it is a whole lot more rigid.

He shold be okay with it as the front funnel hose. Lord knows I wouldn't recommend it but I have some redneck family that I am sure have done that before. As long as it is not between the filter and the TB.
