Default 1992 4 cyl will not start

Hello guys, new kid on the block here.

My 1992 2.3 4 cyl will not start. It cranks fine, but there is no spark when cranking from either coil pack. However, if I coast down a hill and pop the clutch, it fires right up and thereafter runs fine. Sure wish I had a distributor, which would be easier to trouble-shoot.

I think this problem has been developing over time as the engine has previously been hard to start on occasion. A couple of times it refused to start, but if I waited, and came back a bit later it would go. Now that "occasion" is all the time. (yes I should have dug in previously, but intermittant problems are hard to find.)

I suspect the crank position sensor or the ignition control module, but I do not like to easter-egg repairs. Also, the crank sensor appears not as easy as some to replace.

Thanks for reading; I hope someone has a clue.

I take it your 4 cyl has dual coil packs, and 8 plugs. From what I understand, only one set of plugs operates during cranking. Once it starts, the other set fires up.

If your primary one is intermittent, it won't start, but by pushing it down a hill, it's rotating the engine, but not cranking, maybe it's starting on the secondary coil pack.

The coil packs look identical. Why not try swapping them around? If it starts fine after doing that, you know the coil pack that was formerly in the primary position is intermittent.

Just speculation on my part, but it sounds reasonable and doesn't cost anything to try.
