By your profile picture looks to be a 94?

There should be little dots or marks on the gears to align them up

If there are 2 dots align the gear with one dot into the middle of the 2 dots hope that makes sense

on the cam gear you have to align the triangle with the triangle and oil pump you align diamond with diamond but it might be the other way around ive done both my rangers one was 2.5 and the one now is 2.3 and they are both the same with the timings marks i hope this helps because the dicks at the ford dealer in billings here wouldnt help me wats so ever. but good luck and its not too hard as long as you have a strong breaker bar that you can rest on the frame and crank the engine over but other than that pretty easy.

On the 2.3L engines align the triangles on the cam sprocket and align the diamonds on the oil sprocket. Use the timing cover markings on the crank to align TDC or remove the crank pulley and set the keyway to the 12 o'clock position. Then just route the belt counterclockwise starting with the crank then the oil sprocket and then the cam sprocket. Make sure all the slack is removed between the sprockets. Otherwise you will end up moving on of the sprockets out of alignment.

I had a major issue trying to get the belts teeth to line up with the teeth on the cam sprocket and get all the slack out of the belt between the cam and oil sprocket. If you have slack between the cam and oil sprocket when you release the tensioner the cam will shift to the right past your mark. Bummer. lol

Well, my 94 2.3L only had the diamond on the oil pump axillary gear, but not one on the motor/cover itself.

The timing cover and crankshaft pulley will need to be installed in order to line up the hash marks on the crankshaft.

You want to align the TDC marks for each gear, including the camshaft, crankshaft, and aux gear. Confirm that the crankshaft is at TDC and that the camshaft is at the 5-oclock position.

As for installing the belt, check out the link in my signature, but here's an excerpt.

54. Ensure that all timing marks align to TDC position, start routing timing belt starting at the crankshaft sprocket. Remove all tension between crankshaft sprocket and oil pump sprocket and route timing belt around oil pump sprocket. Remove all tension between oil pump sprocket and camshaft sprocket. Route timing belt around camshaft sprocket. Route the back side of the timing belt around the tensioner pulley and loosen the tensioner adjustment bolt - tighten adjustment bolt and spring bolt (17mm).

Place crankshaft pulley slightly onto the shaft and rotate the motor two full revolutions by hand (and make sure your timing marks still align - if they don't, repeat step 54).

Remove crankshaft pulley from shaft.

Tighten down all parts (such as the crankshaft position sensor) that you had previously removed and re-install any components to the crankshaft that you had previously removed.

Install the outer timing cover.

Install the center crankshaft pulley bolt (reverse of removal) and torque to 103-133 foot-pounds.
Install the four crankshaft pulley bolts.

Really??? The 94 Ranger doesn't have inner timing marking for you to match with the markings on the sprockets?? My 96 has the triangles on the cam and the diamonds on the oil auxilary. With the crank keyway at 12 Ho'clock at TDC. Hmmm

The oil sprocket had the mark, but not a mark to line it up to.

Strange, I know, but I just made sure to install it the same way it came off.

Hey if you got it back in time that's awesome. Unfortunately I had to remove the head and didn't have that luxury.

I know this thread is super old but I'm kind of in the same boat, I'm replacing the timing belt on a 93 ranger 2.3 and I can't get it over the tensioner for the life of me. The old belt I took off has 131 teeth, after market belt from autozone has 129. I had autozone double check and even called a couple ford dealers (who weren't helpful AT ALL, they kept trying to sell me a ford belt... I don't want a belt, I just want to TALK to someone who knows what they're talking about)

Anyway. Autozone swears they gave me the right belt. I'm so close to getting it over the tensioner but I don't think I should have to use a pry bar to stretch it to get it on. I'm going to try to put a picture up, maybe if you guys can see it it'll be easier to figure out.

The trick is to pry the tensioner over and tighten the nut, then the belt should slip over easily.
If it still wont slip over, it's probably the wrong belt.

No one told me they dropped a 96 engine in my 93 body, so I wasn't doing myself any favors when I checked and doubled checked the vin. Got it now, thank you! The right belt slipped on easily and I'm up and running again.
