Default Dreaded Abs Light and No speedo

Hi,
Have the dreaded abs light and no speedo/odometer. I tried new vss and it worked for a little while but only until the speed of 50 mph. Within 10 min it was no longer working and the speedo was only going up to 35 again. Also I installed the Motorcraft sensor so I am guessing that is not the issue. So my question is where do I go from here? Is there another sensor that controls the speedo/odometer? I'm dumb founded at this point and don't know if i should start inspecting the wires going to the vss? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Colin McNerney

Default The day after

The day after I finished the sensor, I drove down 15 miles from my house. I got 10 miles with everything working like it should no jumping of speedo and the speed was accurate. Then abs light comes back on and the speedo beings jumping like crazy once again. Drove me nuts. Really not enjoying this issue and want to fix it as soon as possible. I really appreciate the help if someone would be able to help me.

Hopefully you just got a duff VSS. Not sure how the VSS drive works in the rear end, but in a FWD automatic Ford, the VSS mounts to the tranny and there's a plastic gear inside the tranny that drives the VSS. If that gear gets chewed up, the VSS will skip. A new VSS would work for a short time, but the tranny gear would probably cause a premature failure.

I'd remove the VSS and see if you can look inside and see the condition of the drive gear. Might have to use a mirror and a flashight. Maybe get a finger in there and feel around.

I'd also examine your new VSS carefully, not only for chewed gear teeth, but see if the gear spins too freely. A common fault is water gets inside, freeze, and pushes the electrical sensor up and the square shaft pops out of the VSS gear.

If you don't find anything obvious, maybe try a junkyard for a $5 VSS and see what happens. Having to buy another new one won't be much fun, especially if it's not the problem.

Here's one that failed from ice in a Ford Taurus:

Here's another pic showing all the parts:

Thanks guys for the quick responses. Oddly enough after resetting the ecu 4 times my speedo is becoming more accurate only coming down when the brakes are hit. Still my abs light is on but not terribly concerned. 1KOOL1 I changed the vss on the top of the diff 2times the first time with an advanced auto part and the second time with a motorcraft part. The second one seemed to work slightly better than the advanced part. Also I did some research and seemed to conclude my 2000 ford ranger has no transmission gear that runs the speedo. Its all tied to this vss on the top of the dif. Still I dont know how to fix my present issue but will live with it if necessary.

Thanks Again Guys
