Throttle cable mod
I have heard of a mod you can do to the throttle cable. For more power? How much truth is in it? Can you do this on an 08 2.3? If so how do you?

It doesn't add more power or affect your output in anyway, it just provides more responsiveness to your accelerator by tweaking the characteristics of the pedal.

Over time, the throttle cable stretches and the housing seats more into its ferrules, thus, adding play to the gas pedal. You never feel this because:
a) it happens so slowly and
b) the gas pedal drops down more so there's no "free" period (where you push on the pedal and nothing happens) while you're pressing on the gas.
This is an easy fix, and its free. All you need is a few zip-ties and 10 minutes.
Crawl under your dash and find the throttle cable. There's two of them under there, one is the right one, the other one I have no idea what it does, but don't zip tie it. What you want to do is pull the gas pedal off the floor and wrap as many zip ties as you can fit around the excess throttle cable sticking out. I fit three around mine and the difference is huge. Once you've done this, your truck can fully achieve a wide opened throttle. My friend Tom did this and claims his truck down shifts smother now. Whether of not it helps shifting is up to you. I don't know. But you will get better response at the pedal.

That's interesting. Shouldn't need to do it on an '08 just yet, though.

It only makes a difference if your throttle plate is not hitting a full 90* when you stomp the pedal. If you are getting full travel out of the throttle body, then all you are doing is raising the pedal, there by giving it "more throttle" at the same pedal position. For older vehicles, it restores lost pedal travel. On newer ones, pointless IMHO.

Just did it after reading this. Put two small zip ties. DUDE!!!! You can seriously feel the difference in the acceleration. Seriously I was "traffic light" racing everyone ha ha

yeah i did this a few years ago but i ended up using a short wide hose clamp, and it eventually cut the throttle cable (i was 16 and stupid, not thinking that a metal hose clamp would wear into a cable) it broke while i was pulling into traffic, not a good feeling when the pedal hits the floor and nothing happens when youre barely rolling and theres 70 mph traffic coming at you haha. I had to rig it up with the hose clamp, some duct tape and 3 or 4 plastic ties i had in the truck to reattach the cable to the pedal, but it did hold up enough to get me home to the junk yard the next day and back again. but you shouldnt have any problems with using plastic ties because the ties will wear before the cable. but with my throttle body spacer came with brackets to move the cable bracket, i just mounted those backwards and took the slack out of the other end of the cable. it does make a big difference though

Re: Throttle cable mod
I did this yesterday , what a difference in drivebilty. the throttle is more responsive , its like I have an new truck . the gas mileage seems better as well . this is a mod well worth the effort doing especially on an older truck

Re: Throttle cable mod
Hi guys, this is my first post on this site. I recently got a 1995 3.0L 2wd ranger, manual transmission, and it felt okay but a little slow. I saw this mod and did it, and it feels so much better now! I think I was only getting about half of the correct pedal travel. Hope the zip ties last...

Awesome! Glad things worked out for you! I did this about 2 years ago and the cables are still holding up and the truck runs better than ever. So you have no worries on that!
