Unhappy Low cylinder PSI = New Motor ???

My 1997 2.3L 4cyl Ranger was running really rough with an extreme loss of power. I took it to the local auto shop and the mechanic there said that he did a compression check on all four cylinders. Cylinder #1 had a 40 PSI reading, #2 had 130 PSI, #3 140 PSI, and #4 had 50 PSI. He told me this was causing the #1 and #4 cylinders to misfire which is why I've been having such an extreme loss of power. He then told me that because of this my truck needs a whole new motor! Is this true or is this guy trying to rip me off ?

You can probably rebuilt it just fine. Not that hard to do. But, its probably cheaper to buy a junkyard motor that is running and drop that in place.

Its fixable, for sure.

But probably not practical unless you are a very good mechanic, or know a very good mechanic.

As mentioned above, it would be more feasible to find one out of a junkyard with lower miles. Still expect to spend anywhere from 300.00 on the lower side up to a grand or more.

I found a nice used motor for $400.00 that I'm gonna drop in it. I just can't believe that my motor gave out with 193,000 miles on it. I thought it still had at least a couple of years left in her.
