Yes they are a pain in the ass to get to on the 4 cyl motors. Why are you replacing it? Sometimes adding Seafoam to the crank case oil will unclog/free up a dirty PCV valve and you don't have to remove it for that.

Re: changing pcv valve 2003 ranger 2.3
So I know that this threat has been dead for some time now, but I'm trying to replace the PCV valve on MY 2003 2.3 Ranger. Did removing the wheel work? I still can't even locate mine!

I want to know too. I need to do mine and I already took off the manifold once for the spark plugs and I am not looking forward to doing it again

Old but... The valve is open to the crankcase all the time... and the crankcase is open to the outside through the breather. So if you're "sensing a vacuum leak" through the PCV, that would tell me it is open and working?

Well, the PCV isn't exactly open to a breather. They used too. They're recycled and are all closed systems in modern cars.
I'll be doing it on my '03 Mazda B2300 next week. Mine's a 2.3 inline 4 which i believe matches your engines. I'll post pics here and make a DIY also. stay tuned =]

No it isn't. There is a breather where air goes INTO the crankcase, usually connected to a fresh air source such as the engine's intake tube downstream of the MAF. The PCV valve is on the other side of the engine and sucks the contaminated air out of the crankcase into the intake manifold. It is not a closed system, it is just a branch off of the intake system and open.
If it was a closed system, it wouldn't be able to do anything.

@2ZZGE05: I'd appreciate those pictures if you could provide them. preferably something that shows the surrounding equipment as well!

It is a closed system. It's recycled through the intake, like you said, making it closed. Open means you'd have a breather filter open to the atmosphere.

Maybe you're reading this wrong or picturing it wrong. It is NOT closed.
FRESH AIR goes into the crank case from the air intake tube downstream of the MAF. That is wide open to the outside with an oil separator on the valve cover where it connects. Contaminated air is sucked out through the PCV into the intake manifold. That is not closed. That is a wide open fresh air system. And if you try to vacuum test that line, it will clearly show wide open.

Re: changing pcv valve 2003 ranger 2.3
It would be great if one of you guys would take and post a pic of the item on each post, where possible. Some of us need to see before we touch . Seriously, it would help a great deal. For example, check out the recent post on changing the fuel filter; those a great and very useful pics. Love this forum and reading the postings. Happy 4th to all!!!
