Default Type of oil and additive?

Hello All,

I just got a 2000 for Ranger 2.5L with 101K. The engine runs great, starts up smooth. I was told the previous owner used part synthetic oil, and was wondering what oil you all might recommend. Also is there an additive that I should use? Thanks.

101k you might can try full synthetic oil. If you do use the full synthetic and you lose a lot between oil changes you can go back to semi synthetic. What I use is 3 quarts of full synthetic and 2 quarts of high mileage oil it works for me and mine has 140K.

I started off with a synthetic blend then went to full synthetic in my truck. I never trusted oil addidtives though. The synthetic blend like Valvoline actually pulled alot of sludge out on the first shot. I could see the clumps come out of the drain so I highly recommend doing it that way

did some one swap in a 2.3L?... 98-2001 are 2.5L (stroked version of the 2.3L)......
I agree with Apmorse, and use good oil filters, cheapy's can cause dry starts

I use mobil 1 oil in all our trucks. Filter depends on whats on sale with the oil. But its always either a mobil 1, bosch, or K&N. Its on sale here every other month, 5 qts and the filter for 26.99

Honestly, it doesn't matter. Synthetic is best, however regular oil is fine if you change it every 5-6k miles.

If the motor doesn't use oil you don't need additives or High Mileage oils. The High Mileage oils have additives intended to swell seals and generally reduce oil consumption. But for a motor which doesn't use oil they may actually do more harm than good. Oil and filters depend on your budget. I always use full synthetic. But non synthetic is quite less money. Your choice..and if the motor does use oil you may want to try the High Mileage oils. I'm thinking though that if everybody used full synthetic oil we would collectively import less oil from countries that aren't really friends of ours.
