Default 5 Speed Automatic tranny

Hello all I am interested in another 2 wd ranger reg cab. I do notice some of the 2005-2008 rangers now have a 5 speed automatic tranny. Anyone out their have one or anyone heard of any issues with this new tranny? I am quite surprised with the so-so MPG on the highway. Thought it would have been the same or better than the 5 speed stick. thanks

the 5 speed auto has been out for several years now so its not exactly new, my 01 4.0 has the 5 speed auto. as with any auto they have there issues but if they are not abused and are maintained well they can be very reliable. the biggest killer of auto transmissions is lack of maintinence (regular fluid/ filter changes and flushes)

EDIT: the 5 speed auto (5R44E and 5R55E) is the same trans as the 4 speed (4R44E) with just one extra gear so the reliability is no different than the 4 speed.

The 5 speed automatic has been around longer than that. My 03 has one. The 5R44E.

Pretty good transmission, but mine's flashing the O/D Off light at 45K miles. I think it's something stupid, but every transmission shop here wants to either throw parts at it, or completely rebuild it, both of which it doesn't need.

My old '00 Ranger had a 4R44E 4 speed auto with 189,000 original miles on it. Transmission longevity depends on maintenance. If the transmission is properly maintained, then it should be trouble free for most of it's life. Ford doesn't have a good rep when it comes to Ranger automatic transmissions, so maintenance is crucial.

Edit* 01 Ranger beat me to it, but he is correct.
