The pressure switch is probably shot. Cheap and easy to replace.

You can try valve medic chemical before your next oil change. I had a miata that would have that problem, it is something common with the older valve lifters in miatas but I would use valve medic before the oil change and it worked fine. I heard from other miata owners that Lucus oil stabilizer helped too in the miatas. You can try it if you want.

x2 on the cheap filter, I don't know if all filters have the stop valve or not, it stops the oil from draining from the filter, this way you don't have an empty filter upon starting.

Seems how your filter is horizontal, I would check into that

K&N is a good filter, along the lines of a Wix, so it's not the filter in this case and K&N filters are certainly not cheap. They are more expensive than most good filters out there like Wix, NAPA Gold, Pulorator, and PureOne.

It has been found on other forums that certain engines like certain brands of oil better than others (assuming you are using the recommended grade). You might have to play around with various brands to see which keeps the engine noise down.

Hey, I have the exact same issue with my 97 2.3. Loud chatter for 1 to 2 seconds, zero oil pressure, then the needle jumps up to normal and the chatter stops, and the engine idles perfectly.

Did you ever figure out what was up?
