Question How Much Oil Is Too Much?

Ford did my first oil change which I think they overfilled it a little. The question is how much is too much? I've always heard that overfilling is bad. I'll be doing my own oil changes from now on.

In the picture it is about 1/2" above max. The is with the engine warm after sitting for an hour.

I'm going on a trip to Alabama in a couple of weeks and was wondering if I should drain some out or leave as is. My next oil change isn't due for about another 2900 miles.

I would drain it. If the engine is hot it should be maximum at the top hole, if it is cool it should be at the top of the cross hatch. Since your truck wasn't even hot, it is obviously way over filled. Just open the drain plug for a second and then screw it back on and be ready to add a little oil as needed.

That's only 1/2 quart over full. Not enough to worry about.

Now if it was an automatic transmission I would say drain it.

I'm sure it's ok but then there's this... On page 239 of the 2010 Manual states:
"Oil levels above the upper hole or MAX mark may casue engine damage. Some oil must be removed by an authorized dealer.

Take it back to them and request it to be done correctly.

Personally I wouldn't lose sleep. If it was gonna do damage it would have done it by now.

no tools needed. park at an old dirt road or grassy park or wutever u want. slightly unscrew oil filter let it drain a little and screw back quickly. dont get burned. clean oil filter with rags and hands. and check oil fliter tightness again because if u first tighten it it will slip cuse of oil. clean a second time. chek oil level. before starting truck.

Maybe a little paranoid but I drained some out the drain plug into my oil collection pan.
It's now just above the top hole on the dipstick. Ford sure had the drain plug on tight! I had to use a rag on my wrench to put enough pressure on it to break it loose.
Thanks for everyones suggestions and comments.
