83 Ranger XLT - Tries, but won't start.
I'm hoping you guys can help me troubleshoot a starting problem on my girlfriends 4 cyl manual 83 Ranger with a carburetor. It's in relatively great condition with 98,000 miles on it and it has always run well. I can't figure out what's wrong. Basically, she started it up the other morning and let it warm up. It started fine and once it was started she drove to meet a friend for coffee before work. When she went back out to head to work, it wouldn't start. It tried! It tries to turn over and it grabbed, but then sputtered out right away like it was being starved of gas.
Here's the troubleshooting I've done and the replacements I've made in trying to figure out what's wrong.
Replaced the distributor cap and rotor, Alternator, plugs, wires, fuel filter, air filter. No luck in solving the problem. I've also removed the fuel line into the fuel filter to see if the Fuel Pump is working, it is and the carb is getting gas. I've tested the spark at the coil and I've tested the spark at the plug, both are fine and there is spark. I sprayed the carb with starter fluid prior to starting and also while starting, neither method made it start. The timing belt was replaced a year ago and it is fine, not broken or anything. I also hooked up the jumper cables to make sure the battery wasn't the problem. It's not.
So, I'm at a loss. Is it the carb? Could it have jumped timing? I'd think it would run like crap first before it would jump the timing so much that it couldn't start. Plus the timing belt is new! What's important is that it tries to start, if I hold the throttle wide open it will catch but stall out like it's flooded. I can't keep it running more than a couple seconds. I first though it wasn't firing properly and the gas wasn't combusting in the cylinder, but replacing the cap and rotor as well as the wires and plugs should have solved that. I need help. Help?!
