You could probably change it every 7500 miles, but I wouldn't wait that long with a brand new truck. I think it's normally suggested that after buying a new vehicle you change the oil after a couple hundred miles to get rid of the metal flakes from the engine breaking in, then after a couple thousand, and then get on the regular suggested interval.

I changed mine at 6,000 Km's which is about 4,000 miles. I replaced it with full synthetic against the advise of the salesperson who sold it to me. He advised to go at least to 20,000 Km's before going with synthetic because the rings may not seat properly....old wives tale I suspect. My truck did not use any oil in the first 6,000 and hasn't used any since and I have changed the oil three times and am at 18,000 Km's. I love the truck...4 cyl. 5 speed. Dave

I changed mine out at 2500mi. Penzoil Platinum 5W20. Have 4500 now and doing great. No difference in how it runs or economy from factory fill. Seems like a great little engine, want it to stay that way, may keep it a while...........

I did the first oil change at 1500Kms. Also changed the transmission fluid and differential at the same time.

Change your trans fluid as well, they come factory with AFT in them. Switch to gear oil. I put 75-90 in mine.

i do mine every 2,000 miles some will say its to early but its never to early to keep your engine oil clean. plus i have to. The old dip shit who owned the truck before me didn't believe in religious oil changes and the oil gets dirty within a 1,000 miles. But i have it pretty much clean now that i could go 3,000 but i don't care. oil changes are cheap and easy to do.

No need to change the oil on your new car at 200 miles, old wives tale. You are just wasting good oil. If you don't feel good changing it every 7,500 miles, then do it at 5,000 miles. Really, there is not need to change it sooner, (unless you like to burn your money). People will beat this topic to the pulp. But here is my experience of driving cars for over 25 years: I use the manufacturer schedule, not the 'Jiffy Lube' rip-off schedule. Never had any of my cars break down due to oil being too old or worn out.

Thats exactly what I did as I have about 13K on the truck now . I will bring it back about every 3 to 5K miles . I use synthetic and could wait longer but a lot of Highway miles and I like to make sure its changed frequently .

Just me ....

My first oil change was free so I changed mine at 1010 miles. I've always did the first oil change early on a new truck.

Just always remember to use a good oil filter. I know some people will get all upset that I say this. But my experience is never ever use a Fram. My shop friends always echo this to me as well. I have had at least 3 of these filters to fail in some way or another in the past 20 plus years of changing oil. This may be MORE important than the type, brand or reasonable length between changes. IMO

Okay, this is a really old thread, but I have a similar question for the same engine/truck I just bought.

In my mind 7.5K miles for an oil change sounds like a lot of miles before changing, but also too long to wait. This Ranger is my second vehicle and I don't drive it very often. I've always thought it was supposed to a good rule of thumb to change oil at least every 6 months. At the rate I'm going, in 6 months I'll have far, far less than 5K on it. The manual doesn't say anything about how often it should be changed, only distance.

At any rate, it's time for its first oil change on my watch (it has 60K miles), and the oil that the previous owner was running is Castrol GTX 5W20. I'm planning to stick with the same for a rotation every 6 months no matter how many miles. I've heard that with SN grade conventional oils have come a long way, and I'm thinking synthetic would be overkill for oil changes with rotations with such low miles.

I know that motor oil is something that ranges into personal religion for some folks, but for those of you with lots of direct experience with the Duratec 2.3 feel free to tell me if I'm way off the mark.

Conventional oil 5-20 is just fine and keep oil changes below 7k for conventional or once a year, whichever comes first. You should also factor in driving conditions were you live, highway or city driving, and your driving habits.
