Default Gauge Shows Overheating '95 2.3L

Hi, I've been having some type of indiction problem with my gauge. The indications I get are pretty erradic. Sometimes it will read normal (starting at cold a rising up to around 1/4 of the way up) other times it starts right at the hot limit even when it hasn't been run for a day. For a while the needle would start from 1/2 way up and continue until it reached the stop and would then flick back down to 1/4 and continue cycling up and down slowly. I'd like to unplug the thermocouple and test it with it unplugged only I haven't been able to find it. Where is that located on this engine? I don't think the engine is really overheating and I've been keeping the coolant plenty full. My first guess would be the sender itself, but I need to find it first.
