Re: 2011 Ford Ranger 4x2 in Snow
my 4x2 2.3 did just fine in the winter and it will haul more than you think. just put some wieght in the back before you go driving in the snow. or it will slide arould like crazy.

Re: 2011 Ford Ranger 4x2 in Snow
This winter, I will typically turn AdvanceTrac off. Last winter, stability control was especially "interesting" a number of times....usually in the wrong place, wrong time scenario. I have a number of winters with my other truck, a 1996 Mazda 4x2 3.0 litre V6. Even with studded winter tires and several hundred pounds of sand bags, the Mazda was still hard to get around in the wintertime.....main reason why I bought a 4x4 instead. Winter last 5-6 months every year where I live.

Re: 2011 Ford Ranger 4x2 in Snow
A 2wd Ranger is not that bad in snow. Weight and tires are the key.
First, either make your own sand box or go get some sand tubes.
Second, Buy a set of cheap rims from the junk yard and mount up a good set of snow tires. Use them just in the winter time, they will last for a couple years.

Re: 2011 Ford Ranger 4x2 in Snow
i personally think all this talk about the 2.3 just not cutting it is very biased.. so it wont be as easy in the winter as a 4x4 but i know quite a few people with 4x4 trucks who dont even use their 4x4 capabilities... so why bother have it... sure its nice to have in an emergency but unless youre driving like a complete ass you shouldnt have any problems. i almost bought a 4x4 for winter use aswell till i realised that ive been driving a 2wd honda accord and did just fine... so u cant really compare that much because its fwd but for hauling some wood and for runs to a hardware shop... come on a 2.3 is plenty of power and unless u have under developed driving skills u should be ok

Yeah, it has more HP than the 2.5L but it lacks torque. That's the sacrifice of going with a 2.3L.
Mine lugged around more than this much weight. The 4 cylinders are decent when pared with a manual.
The problem is when you live around here, between Dallas, Tx and Austin, Tx, after all the downshifting you do to make it up a hill it's more cost effective to get a 4.0 v6 and drive that. I probably spent less money on my Jeep's i6 on gas than I have on this 2.5L.

Re: 2011 Ford Ranger 4x2 in Snow
I have a 4 cyl. 2010 XL super cab and just love it. I haul my ATV and notice no difference in power. On my last visit to my Ford dealer I was advised that the full sized Ford V8's get better mileage than the 4.0 Ranger! I had a 1990 4.0 and put 350,000 Km's on it. Very solid engine but mileage stinks.

Re: 2011 Ford Ranger 4x2 in Snow
we just had a bad cold front pass thru, and it brought ice, and snow, and i have to tell you, my 06 2.3L 2WD did fawkin awesome in the snow with studded tires, i was able to go more places then a 4x4... you know 4x4 is nice, but if you can't get traction then there is no use for it

Re: 2011 Ford Ranger 4x2 in Snow
My FX4 with studded General Altimax Arctic winter tires should keep me up and running in most situations.
Thinking about picking up a set of tire cables/chains for the super nasty stuff...

The Lima 2.3 and 2.5s have the same torque rating as the Duratec 2.3.....I don't know where you come up with that statement.
The only real power difference is the 24 HP difference between the Duratec and the Lima 2.5.
As far as the 60 HP diiference that another has stated.......yet another koolaide drinker........24 HP between the duratec and the 2.5 and 34 between the Lima 2.3 and Dtech 2.3.

Re: 2011 Ford Ranger 4x2 in Snow
Just make sure you have some weight in the back, and decent snow tires or all terrain tires if it's standard start in 2nd causing less torque getting transfered to the wheels to decrease wheelspin honestly I took my truck out when I first got it in the winter to a empty parking lot knowing where I could not hit anything or harm myself or anyone else and tested fishtailing and counter steering and knowing how to control it under loss of traction. Alot of people in 4wd vehicles get over confident and tend to end up in a ditch basically not knowing how to control their vehicle under loss of traction, when driving a rwd vehicle in the winter it causes you to become a better driver and how to drive to the conditions but most importantly think ahead do not rush or speed. Everyone has preferance and budgets, a 4wd or 2wd and 2.3,2.5 or 3.0 or 4.0 Their all rangers/b series so people should not be bashed as to which one they own, they provide people with a choice. All in all it's going to be my 2nd winter with a 2009 b2300 and I just have just dunlop signature series tires and 300lbs in the back and haven't got stuck unless I wanted to get stuck. I'm not here to step on anyones toes I'm just trying to review him my opinions on a truck that's basically the same. goodluck!

So true.
Back when i had a jeep, i used to pull 4x4s out of snowbanks. It's so easy to lose control on a four wheel drive, people don't realize how much easier it is to correct a trajectory in a rwd. I used my 4x4 gears mainly offroad, not on them.
As for engine size, a 4 cyls will do the job fine in snow. If a smart can do it with bicycle tires and a blender engine, why not a compact pickup truck.

Sorry about that, no need to call names now. The earlier ones were rated around 85hp, didn't realize they had bumped them to 112 hp in 1996.

No need to be a child and insult someone just because they don't know.
All I know is that my Lima has been around long enough to prove itself time and time again.

Re: 2011 Ford Ranger 4x2 in Snow
weight in the back...ive got a 4cyl 2wd and a manual and i did fine except for one time but nothing a little practice driving in the snow cant fix. Weight in the back definitely helps though good luck bud!
