Exclamation 2.5l major issues please somebody help me :(

Hi everyone,

I haven't had an opportunity to post on here often because my job and school rob me of my time, but Im having major issues with my 2000 ranger 2.5 l 5spd. To date, I continue to experience a major misfire on cylinder 2, and it idles relatively fine, until you tap the throttle and then it causes the truck to violently shake, and 3 out of 5 times it will stall. I have replaced the plugs, wires, swapped coil packs, replaced the fuel injector, cleaned the MAF, replaced the air filter, used top end cleaner, replaced the fuel filter, tried the 2 part engine restorer mix, and I have brought it to 4 places (2 of them ford dealers) and no one can figure out what is wrong. I'm so frustrated and am desperate for suggestions or help so if anyone has any ideas, please let me know. Thx in advance.

----------

what codes are you getting ..just the p0302 code

Current project: 2004 Ext Cab, 4WD, 4.0, Auto, 135k(purchase price $1,350)needs an engine. I think a timing chain skipped. No rust or dents, needs a compound. UPDATE: I bought a 4.0 out of a 2009 Ranger 4x4, 87k for $800 Just waiting to get the swap done.

We did test the coil packs. The compression tests came back 180 at idle and 210 under load. We also cleaned the throttle body, but the idle air control valve has not been cleaned, but I did purchase a new one and haven't had a chance to put it on yet. I figured just to buy it new bc the truck sat for extended period of time according to the previous owner, which is why the egr was all gummed up as well. I guess we will wait and see whatdifference the iacv will make. Thanks for responding.

I just wanted to give an update on the situation that the new iacv has NOT solved the problem. I'm just at a loss and so is everyone else that's attempted to help me fix this truck. One guy wants to tear open the engine to see if it's a broken valve spring, but the issue doesn't happen constantly, it's somewhat intermittent. I just don't know which direction to go and am just so frustrated with this whole situation. Can anybody give me any suggestions or ideas as to what this could be??

Yeah it takes awhile after I clear the code, but the p0302 is the only code that comes up. Like even today I cleared all the codes and went on a 100 mile trip and every time I stop for a stoplight, it violently shakes anywhere from 5 seconds to 30, and the weird part is it will even out after that and then it idles smoothly. Then at the end of the trip, I revved it up once in the driveway, and immediately let go of the pedal, and it violently lurched for 2 seconds, then stalled out.

I am having the same exact problem with my 2001 2.5. I hooked up a scanner and thought my coolant temp sensor was climbing too fast, but after replacement it made no difference. I have had a mechanic at work look at it and he thinks it's a vacuum leak, but I'm having no luck finding one. Have you found anything yet.

Nope no luck yet on finding the problem. I'm just completely at a loss as to what it could be, and we did replace the upper intake manifold, throttle body, and I think one other gasket, and it made no difference. Now someone told me it could be a sign that my catalytic converter is going bad, and that the issues will only intensify. Did your mechanic check yours already?

i would guess vacuum leak, my truck had simular issue, but not as severe as you speak, I found cpl rotted lines, fixed.. I cld rev up and as idling down it wld miss something awful n try to stall...I blocked EGR vacuum line with a BB.. has ran fine since..

Not trying to insult your intelect, but did you put the spark plugs in the right firing order?

a vacuum leak will not cause a misfire on only one cylinder...when you have a misfire on one specific cylinder.......you check and or replace the plug...wire or coil to eliminate ignition...once thats taken care of you go to the fuel...if you have injection pulse...and you said you replaced the injector....your next step is pulling all 4 spark plugs...pulling the fuel pump relay....and doing a compression test on all 4 cylinders....

After searching 30 pages of posts, found about half a dozen people withe this same problem with no satisfactory answer. I am a 20 year mechanic with a good all around knowledge of how these things run, however my specialty is busses. I have replaced both coil packs, all 8 plugs, new motorcraft wires, and the fuel filter. New erg valve and checked for vacuum leaks. My tsp is 18% at idle. It is crazy that there is no good repair posted about this problem. I work with 10 former dealership and private garage mechanics and we will get to the bottom of this, even if it kills me!! Thank goodness my ranger is a third vehicle. I can leave it home and tinker. I feel for you guys who rely on your truck to get to work.

Firing order is ok. Truck runs good at freeway speeds. It's an idle problem. Worse when it's cold.

not understanding why it would only affect 1 cylinder, you would assume....if it was something besides spark or fuel.....you would get a 3000 code......just a random misfire detected by the ECM...but you have only 1 affected cylinder.....only thing I could think of would be a bent valve

I know it's sounds odd, with out insult, I'm ASE certified & ASE advanced BMW mechanic... I tried to get to the bottom of an odd mis-fire, (one cylinder #3) with everything workin/tested.. after I solved the vacuum leak n blocked EGR it stopped, hasnt done it in over a yr. thr will always be anomalys that logical thinking will never solve..
