I replaced the IACV, gave the throttle body a good cleaning with a bottle brush, and I sprayed the mass air sensor with cleaner. I was told that when you replace the iacv you need to disconnect the battery for a few and then take it for a ride for it to relearn. I did all this and it is definitely improved. I can still cause a low idle by jabbing the throttle, but under normal driving it is better. Not perfect, but better. Next on the agenda- an exhaust leak at the spring joint and a rattling muffler heat shield.

Any updates on this? I have a truck which shakes violently coming to a stop sign. BUT it will always smooth itself out once the engine is warm, then you'll forget about the shaking. The colder it is, the more violent the shaking at idle. There will often never be a code. But if a code does come up, it's a cylinder 2 misfire. If the truck gets warmed up and the shaking stops, the CEL will eventually go out. When there is a very violent episode, the CEL will come on again.

I DO NOT KNOW HOW A PROBLEM COMES AND GOES LIKE THIS ONE DOES. FIX IT OR RUN DOWN = FORD

Working on a friend's truck with similar issues: 2001 Ranger 2.5L. Shakes at idle but does not stall. It will drop down to about 400 rpm then jump up to 3000 and then smooth out, such as it is, and repeat in a minute or so.

We cleaned the MAF with MAF specific cleaner, replaced the IACV, cleaned the throttle body, checked the air filter, replaced the fuel filter, replaced every vacuum line that we could find, replaced the PCV and its grommet, changed the oil & filter, pulled a vacuum on the EGR (no leak down), checked the spark plugs, replaced the O2 sensor (in front of the CAT), and pulled our hair out.

We had the exact same experience as others when we used brake cleaner to spray the injectors so we:

1) replaced the PCV, its grommet and its hose (seemed the spray might be going in around the PCV and it was something we could do in the parking lot)

2) replaced the injector o-rings because we still heard the engine rev when we pointed the straw directly at the base of the injector #1

I was thinking next we would do the intake manifold gasket as that is a common problem on some of the other engines, especially the 4.0, and we still get a lesser but distinct increase in RPM when we point the straw of the brake cleaner can at the intake manifold gasket right at the #1 injector.

Suggestions?

Anyone solve this problem yet? Some are suggesting that our misfire problem is being caused by a defective valve seat. Has anyone replaced the head on their truck?

John

Sounds like a head problem could be the issue at hand. Didn't know valve recession into the head made much of a difference. What's the story there? Why does valve recession make a difference? The only thing I can think of is that it changes how much it opens during a stroke.

Have you tested the resistance of each injector?

Use a voltmeter, unplug the injector, and measure the resistance between it's two leads.

Post back all four readings.
