Default Wrong Fuel/Air Mixture

So, here's my problem: My engine refuses to have a steady idle. If I let it sit and don't mess with the gas pedal, the engine will have quite a bit of trouble staying alive. I can hear it struggling with the RPM's going up and down ever so slightly before it dies. I can hear a "click" before the RPM changes which I'm assuming is the O2 sensor trying to compensate but I don't really know if that's what it is. I'm also thinking it might be a problem with a weak fuel pump because sometimes when I try to start the truck it won't do it. I'll play with the keys a little bit to try to give it a solid static pressure and then try it again and it will usually work. Changing out the O2 sensor is proving to be quite the pain. It's on there pretty good, but I'm still trying. If it's the pump, what's the easiest way to change it? Should I take the bed off and go in from the top or remove the tank?

first things first........fill out a detail profile of your truck so we know what we are working with.........and check for codes and post the actual #'s here.........and idle problem i always start off by cleaning the TB, iacv and the MAF(if equiped)

It's a 4 cyl 98 ford ranger. What and where are the "TB, iacv and the MAF?"

Also, forgot to mention that the spark plugs and leads have already been changed.

Gave a P0171 code.
"definition
fuel trim bank one condition
Explanation
the powertrain control module uses the oxygen sensor to calculate the air/fuel ratio of the engine. the computer has recognized a rich or lean condition on one engine bank only.
probable cause
-if bank one and two codes set together suspect fuel pressure or MAF (mass air flow) sensor
-oxygen sensor defective
-ignition misfire-repair
-fuel injector problem"

Please create a profile of you vehicle, use mine as a templet.....trust me it will show up on ever post and make things easier for you and more people will try and help you that way..............a p0171 code is usauuly never the O2 sensor.......it is the o2 sensor doing it s job and reporting the issue......... since it is the only code it is proably a vacuum leak or a fuel pressure problem.............you should see if you can get a fuel presure gauge and test thepresure.....harbor frieght has them for $20 actron sells them for $45 or the parts stors lend them out..........if it s the pump pulling the bed is best i have a write up I will post..........tb=throttle body maf= mass air flow sensor iacv...idle air control valve.......all those should be cleaned as maintance anyways....

----------

plus you need to change the fuel filter......they cost $10 and the tool cost $10.......

*and if you can afford it buy a Haynes manual...
