Default Whine at idle

I have a 98 ford ranger xlt, when in idle it has a whine and when taking off it still whines in first gear. I have cleaned the IAC and it helped but was still there, so I purchased another one and replaced it and it still whines, can't really tell where it is coming from sounds like the engine.
Checked the trans, fluid is good and the trans has been replaced recently.
Plugs and wires have not been done yet could this be a suppression noise it is loud until after 1st gear, any help would be appreciated.

could be your power steering pump fords are notorious for whinny steering pump

could also be your fan clutch on your main fan

to see if that's bad just turn it by hand if it moves easy its good if you have to put a ton of pressure to move it then the clutch is bad

will check the fan tomorrow, but for some reason I am thinking it is the power steering pump and I do need a new belt also so maybe I can replace both at the same time. Thank you this noise is driving me crazy, this truck has 180,000 miles on it and it runs great except for that annoying noise.

fan moves real easy, how do you tell for sure if it is the power steering pump or is there no way since the steering is fine.

Take a really long screwdriver and put the tip of the screwdriver on the bracket and put the other end against your jawbone like right in front of your ear and you should hear another whinny sound you can also use it to checxk all your pulleys

So stick a big screwdriver on your face then stick it next to your engine pulley?
OK Dr. Giggles.

Shouldn't he make sure he's wearing a tie first?

It's probably your steering pump. I just replaced my recently. Only go with a Ford pump, the aftermarket ones whine just as bad as the worn pump does. Even the Ford pump whines but it is much, much quieter.

I searched for whining power steering pump and found a thread about using lucas additive was thinking about trying that. The pump is full of fluid so adding is not the problem maybe the additive will work maybe not, I already bought it so might as well give it a shot.

I finally was able to get the fluid out and add the Lucas Additive., it is much better still has a slight whine. I can actually hear the motor sound in first gear now. Thanks to all who have helped.
