Default Ignition Switch

Hello all,
Went to start my 97 Ranger 2.3. Starter will not spin, but the ignition remains enable at all times whether the key is in or not.
The only way to remove power is to disconnect the battery.
I can start by reconnecting the battery and applying 12 volts dirrectly to the starter.
What's up with this?
Is it a bad lock cylinder or more?

I would guess the ignition switch,,,,,,,,,not the key cylinder......but just a gueess they both are cheap and easy fix....on some rangers there is a rod that connects the 2 devices

Thanks for the reply.
I started nosing around the steering column and found it is the rod you mentioned. It seems to be snapped in two.
I can remove the key cylinder and the ignition switch without much trouble, but can't figure out how to remove the rod without taking the steering column apart.

I have a similart problem, and need to know how to fix also. I can tunr the igntion and start teh Ranger, but once in a great whil the igntion switch will get stuck in the far forward position causing me to have it stick in place with the dash trouble lights on. I think its a broken switch down below, but how do we fix tehm is my question? Anybody have access to an 'exploded" diagram of this area we can see to fix our Rangers? Thanks.
