Start off with an improved air intake to let the engine breath better. Below left you can see the Air Muffler and the baffle. The air muffler (on the left) goes between the air cleaner and the throttle body. The baffle to the right of it comes off the front of the air cleaner inside the body of your Ranger above the wheel well. As you can see in the picture below right, the air muffler was replaced with a piece of stainless but you can use PVC pipe. This will allow more air flow into your motor, increase HP, and make your motor a little bit louder. Your air cleaner is in two (2) parts; air cleaner canister, and mass air flow sensor. Open your air cleaner and remove the air filter, then unbolt the can in which the filter was in, when you pull the can off, the baffle will be attached to it. Remove the baffle, and reinstall the air cleaner. This will add more air flow, HP, and sound to your Ranger.

mine is a bit different from this .. it has the intake coming into the bottom of a rectangular box where the filter is and just has a hose going from it to the throttle body. would this be easier than a picture?

can we get a pic of your engine bay? Most of us here don't have alot of experience with the early 80s trucks. Heck, I didn't even know they had multi point fuel injection available in 85.

Looks like this

We PMed each other today and I think he is on the right track to make a custom intake tube now

Ah, no muffler.

Strange how they started out with no muffler, progressed into increasingly more restrictive mufflers, then back to no muffler again.

Think he is gonna cut a section out and add some pvc pipe or stainless pipe for better flow

Found this website has some interesting things for the 2.3

I dont know how many will actually apply to your older 2.3 but worth the read I guess

I wonder if any other 2.3 engines have air boxes that have the tube coming off the side?

That way it would be a direct path for airflow

only thing you would need to make sure that the box is the same size

Need to keep it the same size don't want to "starve" it of air

And if you made it way to big it would be sucking to much air
