i know for a fact that using royal purple(or any synthetic) works for gaining a little power, and mpgs!!! Motor trend did a test on it with a stock stang or camero back in the day and they gained like 8 hp. plus some them dont need to be changed for 7500 or 15000. Those claims vary but i dont change it for at least 5000 to 10000 miles. and it still looks good

Oil change intervals, yes. 8hp gain from an oil change, load of BS.

I'm already using M1 and an M1 oil filter. I was surprised to see how many people used a boutique oil like RP in their duratecs, especially since it's +8 dollars a quart. Even when AAP had their special it was still like $40 for 5 quarts and a K&N filter. Back in February I got 5 quarts of M1 and a M1 EP oil filter for $26. :idk:

I buy whatever synthetic is on sale, not because of any hp or mpg gains but because synthetic keeps my engine cleaner. The difference between an engine running with dino oil and synthetic is tremendous. I haven't really noticed any gains either way with it though.

My buddy changed engine oil, tans fluid and rear diff fluids to royal purple syntheics.
5hp to the wheels. But it was atlest 250 bucks for the fluids...to me not worth 5hp

my intake is no longer in the engie bay, and i dont see how that little hole in the stock air box could get that much cold air, so my intake runs through my fog light hole.

Just for S&G a few weeks ago I did some logging in my 2003 2.3. It was a hot day (93 degrees I think?) and I wanted to see how my intake temperature was and what my timing advance read. I logged the data with my laptop and AEM software and I saw that the ECU was seeing intake temperatures 1 to 2 degrees warmer than ambient temperature. I have the stock intake (bought this particular truck used) with I think a fram 5$ filter from autozone or something (filter the truck came with was absolutely filthy)

You say "cold air" like it is really cold air. "Cold air" is supposed to be a relative term that actually describes "unheated air". I don't see how any gains can be made from the stock intake unless you significantly increase the VE of Fords base engine (any of the ranger engines)

For example on my car, I was already making 100whp more than stock before the intake became a restriction. You are not making 100whp more than stock.

I think you bring up a good point. Seeing how ur's runs through the fog light hole it acts more like a ram air/forced air system more so then a intake that is still in the engine bay. U are getting fresh air that is cooler than air in the engine bay. So I would think that u r getting better gains that way. The cooler the air the better right??? Just my thoughts

exactly my point, i ripped out the whole stock intake, and re-routed new intake through the fender down into the foglight hole, i plan on wrapping it as well, because the header is on the same side heating up the intake pipe above. and yes from what i understand, the cooler the air, the better it burns the gas, the better MPG's you get, right??

JP7, you state all the facts, i dont doubt you, but youre using an AEM program on your comp, and what do they make????--cold air intake!!!!, and some of the best on the market, i will be buying their hydro-lok filter soon. im not trying to start anything with you, so please dont take it that way...im just saying. anyways, to each his own, i might have gained some MPG's from that mod, i havent gone and researched (i dont have time for that!), but im sure i did. im not really going for any incredible (100 wheelHP, ya right!) hp gains, but mainly better throttle response and cooler air to the engine, i also wanted to use my fog light hole, i got the idea from a ricer believe it or not!! no hard feelings man!!

Cold air gives a denser charge and uses more fuel. cold air also gives you free timing. It is a double edged sword. I get my best mileage in the summer when it is hot.

I get free software all the time because I'm a licensed AEM tuner. I test their stuff. You want to give me good software for free, I'll use it.
