There is nothing you can buy and/or mod that will cause a change in MPG you'll notice or that will save more money than you spent on it. Your driving habits and techniques are the only things you can change.

And on a related note, no the K&N doesn't actually do anything. Its a giant sales gimick that millions of people fall for. Its up there with the tornado.

well cant say you are right but cant say your wrong. all i can say is i did a k & n then did the air box mod then an exhaust and my milage went from mid to high 20s to now mid to high 30s. so iam not saying anything bad about any mods or good for any mods but i do feel thay did help me. and last two tanks i have got a solid 38 mpg so be your own Judge

If a fancy air filter and modified exhaust added 10mpg, don't you think Ford would do that to it from the factory?

I did the K & N Air filter, and the air box mod, and I saw no changes at all on my MPG, just noise from the air box. I put the air muffler back on, and kept the air in since I spent a lot of money on it.

I am guessing the exhaust was the trick... But I don't like the "louder" sounding truck.

All the emissions crap they've added to the engines has choked the shit out of them. Personally, I think they should have focused on increasing fuel mileage to decrease emissions instead of scrubbing the emissions emitted.

For those wondering why they don't do that from the factory, I think the last few posters have nailed the answer... emissions.
I can't understand why there aren't more diesel powered options here in the U.S.
You can get a diesel powered Ranger in Europe, why not here??? You guys that are impressed with high 30's in mpg (It is impressive for a gasser truck) would be in the high 40's to low 50's with a diesel. Not to mention the TORQUE! Go drive a VW Jetta, Golf, Beetle TDI and see what I mean.
My Jetta is a 5 speed manual. Entering a parking garage, I can put the car into 1st gear, ease out the clutch, let the car pull itself along idling, and it will climb the ramps in the parking garage with my foot off the go pedal. Even did it with 4 adults in the car. Don't believe me? Go try it!
I would be all over a Ranger with a diesel, or an F-150 with a light-duty diesel. A guy I know with a 98 Dodge Ram with the Cummins diesel and 5 speed, 4wd, extended cab, long bed.... gets as high as 22 mpg.
I think our government sets us up to fail with their bullshit policies. If we had more diesel powered vehicles, we would be saving massive ammounts of fuel, we could make bio-diesel, synthetic diesel, refine WVO (waste vegetable oil) as well as using dino diesel.
Ok, sorry for the rant...

Not necessarily, car companies are in business to make money. People have to be willing to buy what you're selling. All too often these decisions are made by bean counters... no offense to bean counters.

I think we could easily have cars that get 70-80 mpg if people were more concerned with MPG's.

I used to work in the parts end of the auto industry. It was common knowledge at that time that a low back pressure exhaust was good for a few mpg's

I agree.. A small turbo-diesel is probably the most efficient power plant we have available. Why are they not available? Perceptions. We don't pay enough for gas yet for people to accept the higher noise and "smelly" exhaust. Wait till gas goes to $7/gal.

Don't forget the oil companies. Less fuel consumption would hit them in the wallet and they don't like that.

I've seen quite a few European Rangers with diesels and you can barely tell they are diesels. They also have the option for a crew cab. Not a very roomy crew cab, but they have one. Think Nissan Frontier like. Not a big fan of the four foot bed they have though. I really don't care for the six foot bed I have now but finding a used one with a seven foot is a rare thing.

Oh yah! Let's not forget the evil empire. Is it just me or did anyone else notice that right after they lifted the ban on offshore drilling, a rig blows up? maybe 10 years since the last one? What's the likelihood of that? Some people do have a vested interest in shortages of inelastic commodities. Just thinking!

And now.... a moratorium on drilling!

I want one of those european Rangers though. I wonder if you could import one.

Actually my plan is to make a Ranger EV. Either the 08 I just bought or maybe an older beater type. the 08 only has like 17k on it and I must say, I really like the truck. Would be hard to pull out a low miles engine like that, it looks and runs like a new truck. My other truck, (the one i'm replacing is a 89 Dodge 3/4 turbo diesel). I'm one who thinks gas is going waaaaaay up, regardless of what happens to the economy.
By the way, anybody else notice that gas prices went down after the fiasco in the Gulf?
Again, just thinking.....

Oh yeah, they blew up their own rig and caused the biggest environmental and economic disaster in history which will cost them billions of dollars to clean up in order to save money. Good thinkin'
