I have no mods to my truck other than using the Scan Gauge & keeping my tires aired up to 44PSI (that's the max recimended pressure which the rating is based on the max load for the tire) I know people that run 60lbs in them. To high for my liking. I'll stick with the tire makers rating.
Driver mod has the biggest effect on MPG.

Light foot on the go pedal.

Look ahead, if you are coming up to a stop sign or red light, just coast to a stop.

Most people travel the same way to & from work. So you learn the lights. Some have longgg reds. Shut it off for the wait. If you are sitting still & the engine is running. Then you are getting 0 MPG.

i coast usually and my tires are set at 38 except for one that goes down last i checked it was 35. they was 44 in winter then summer came and three were at 46-48 and the low was 16.5 lol. but someone told me that it takes more gas to start it then let it run after i shut it off at a light, but i know at diff lights things would be diff.

There have been tests done reguarding how long to idle before you should shut it off. The most agreed apon time I've seen is 7 seconds.
So if you are going to idle longer than that it is better to shut it off.

One thing to keep in mind. You don't have to wait to shut it off at the light. If you are coming up to the light & it turns yellow. Just coast up to the light with the engine off. There is enough vacumm built up to apply the brakes several times before you lose the brake assist. & even after that you still have brakes, you just have to push harder.

It steers just fine. You don't turn the key to the lock position. Just turn it off then return the key to the run position. Then you are steering, coasting with engine off, & able to brake when needed.

I've never tried that stuff in my Ranger. But I swore by it when I owned my own Semi.
I may have to try some in the Ranger.

I've also found that spraying my balls with Fabreeze once a week helps me save $ on my water bill.
I'm so sorry. I realize I'm new here but I just couldn't resist.

Just give me that one and I won't make a habit of it? LOL!!
For real though this is a cool thread and I've been eyeing that scangauge myself. Although if I didn't already have a code scanner I think I would've dove on this baby: http://www.amazon.com/Auterra-DashDyno-Vehicle-Automotive-Computer/dp/B000YTOR56/ref=pd_sbs_auto_6

LOL Mick!
I should be getting my 97 Ranger 2.3 in a couple of weeks when my co-worker finds himself another ride.
I find this thread interesting. I drive almost 50 miles one way to work. The Ranger is going to be my back-up/hauling vehicle. I have a 2004 VW Jetta TDI that I've had for 6 years and 3 days, and it has over 175,500. I fill it up once every 8 days on average, and I get 47 mpg if I drive it like I stole it, and my best tank is 820 miles averaging 51.9 mpg. I LOVE this car.
The Ranger has a shifting issue for me to figure out, and needs tires. Other than that, it runs excellent. New brakes, shocks, clutch and full tune-up all withing the last 20,000 or so. Dark blue with gray interior, standard cab XLT.
I miss having a truck, and this one I am getting a deal on that is worth me fixing the tranny issue.
...and I think I'll pass on the Fabreeze idea, I will just hang 'em out the window as I'm driving

Hey all,
My first post here.
I just bought a 08 supercab 4 cyl 5spd. My goal is to max out the mpg and get at least 30 mpg average. Love the suggestion of the computer monitor. Has anybody tried to mod the exhaust. I have a low pressure exhaust system on my lexus 400 and it gets between 22 and 25 mpg..Not bad for a v8 heavy car. Was wondering if a KN and high flow muffler would make much difference. Anybody?
