Default engine turns but wont start

I have a 4 cylinder 1991 ranger a few days ago I was driving and it did a little rattle so I went home turned it off and now it won't start,it seems like it will start but nothing,any ideas and what I should check?

Could be the fuel pump.

Thanks ffor the advice but that's the first thing I checked and the pump is working

One quick diagnosis is to spray starting fluid directly into the intake after removing the air cleaner tube.

If it fires momentarily, then you know you've got spark, and can begin considering a fuel delivery problem.

You say it almost starts, and you think your fuel pump is ok. At this point it could be fuel filter.

I had the same thing happen on my truck. This may sound crazy but after checking voltage at the computer while daughter cranked the truck, I saw the voltage drop. Then I started looking for a short from the key start switch. Found out that the switch on the column was broken into 2 pieces. $10 dollars later, problem solved. Hope this helps.
