Default 2010 xl oil change 2.3L manual tranny

when doing an oil change on the 2010 4 cyl w manual tranny regular cab I know the bolt plug goes in sideways versus traditional up and down. which direction will the oil drain? should I potition oil pan straight down of the plug or a little to the right??? Also if I simply replace oil filter how much oil will come out only on removing oil filter....

Being so new don't you maybe get a deal on oil changes from the dealer? If so let them do it.

1st one will be free. I was just asking for future reference to avoid making a messs. The reverse thing I forgot I put that in my sig I am laughing as I type this, thats funny. I was thhinking about my Z400 w reverse....

You guys think castrol oil or motorcraft oil can withstand the 7500 mile interval for oil changes being that it only uses 4 quarts of oil.... that 7500 miles is pushing it...

I use synthetic. I used to use Mobile 1..but switched to Royal Purple. Make sure any switch won't give you warranty claims problems with your Ford dealer. Get yourself a workshop manual if you plan on doing things yourself. I scored a factory set for my 2002 via eBay some years ago. You can buy CD's of them too..I don't know how good the quality is of them. Since your truck is so new you may be able to order the factory manuals from the dealer. They won't be cheap. Mine weigh 9.5 lbs..for both volumes. They are written in understandable English...not some tech genius language. Cheaper workshop manuals can be had at most auto parts stores and are good enough for most people. I bought the factory ones because I stumbled upon them.

when it first comes out it will shoot sideways for a min. i just hold the bucket up to it when i loosen the bolt and when it calms down ill set the bucket down and let it finish. theres not a whole lot of oil that will come out with the oil filter though at least not on mine

For pans with plugs on the side, you will want to position the pan slightly over so that the flow does not exceed the side of the catch pan. The angle that the truck is positioned can have an impact on this also, but this is something that needs paid attention to for any oil plugs that are on the side.

Maybe you should take it to Ford and have them do it.

Ranger_Guy,
This is interesting. Look in your Ranger Owners Guide on page 269 which lists "Product Specifications and Capacities" where it says to use "Motorcraft SAE 5W-20 Premium Synthetic Blend Motor Oil"

Interesting that it don't list dino oils as an option.
I don't know if mine came with synthetic or regular oil but I suspect regular.

EDIT: I just learned what "synthetic blend" oil is. It is approximately 70% dino oil mixed with 30% synthetic.
Apparently it has been around for the past couple of years according to my local Ford service department.

Dang, where have I been! LOL!

5W-20 was created to increase fuel mileage by reducing friction in the motor. Though negligible, the tiny effect helps manufacturers meet higher fuel economy standards. At one point Ford issued a service bulletin..NOT to use it in the 4.0. Apparently they changed this not long later. I've always used sythetic because it is supposed to not lose its' viscosity as quickly as regular/non-synthetic oils. However if everyone used it..we wouldn't import as much oil from Arabian countries and such. We still would...but somewhat less. That's enough reason to use it. Here is an article on 5W-20....

PS: I've always used FULL synthetic..not a synthetic blend. Eg's: Mobil 1, Royal Purple, Amsoil, Quaker State (and others) FULL synthetic.

Synthetic oil production has its' roots back in the last years of the 3rd Reich. In the last year of that war they no longer had any oilfields..all of which were in occupied lands..and were now lost. Albert Speer and some others saw such likely to happen as the war turned in 1943. Synthetic oil production was engineered and then done in remarkable time considering the ever increasing bombing of Germany from the same time until the wars end. The last German offensive in the West..the Battle of the Bulge took the allies by surprise since it wasn't thought they could do such at that time. King-tigers, Panthers,Messerschmidt's and all lesser motor vehicles using synthetic oils and fuels. Only the new jet planes didn't since they used kerosene. Germany has many coal deposits. Coal was used to produce their synthetic fuels/oils. Modern synthetics were born out of free enterprise and the interests of oil companies to get into it. Less viscosity breakdown means that you can potentially increase time and distance between oil changes. Check with the manufacturers recommendations. For example there is regular Mobile 1 synthetic and now a newer Mobile 1 Extended performance which advises 15.000 MILE intervals. http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/...Oils/Oils.aspx
