How come?

How come?[/quote]

I searched for The Service Bulletin (TSB) Ford issued years ago regarding this. Found this forum page. The TSB is in a reply far down the page and dates from 2001. Motors/vehicles approved to use the then new 5W-20 are listed 1st,..followed by those NOT approved to use it. If later the 4.0L and others were approved to use it I wonder if anything was changed in the motor like a higher pressure oil pump? A good question for a knowledgeable Ford mechanic. I've always used 5W-30 Full synthetic with no problems including no oil top ups required and it passes emission tests with ease. If you read all the posts on this page (the link I'm going to put here) there is lot of info. With a motor that does use some oil..switching to the 5W-20 could increase the oil use..negating the alleged .6% better fuel economy and maybe give worse readings from an emissions test. My oil cap has 5W-30 on it. I wonder sometime later did 4.0L oil caps start to have 5W-20 on them? I wouldn't know but lots of people here have newer trucks than my 2002. I haven't tried this but on this webpage you can find TSB's for many years of Ford trucks.

If anyones year is listed and there is nothing..that's probably a good thing!

Looks like I found the right place to read...Still breaking in my 2wd, 2.3 banger.
Looking to add Bed Rails, maybe tires one size bigger. Can use all the advice anyone has to lend. Yes I like full synth oils as well and was hopful they can be used in my new 4 banger. Do my own oil changes, tune ups and alot of other things.

http://www.diyrepairmanuals.com/products.asp?cat=15732

You should have the owners manual..the book here. You can buy the factory service manual on DVD here. They are expensive but the real thing. However for do it yourself oil-changes and things like that see about getting a workshop manual from a publisher like Clymer or Haynes instead since the factory ones may not have that. The Clymer ones for motorcycles often have a chapter on performance mods. I've never looked through a car/truck one though. You can order them from many auto parts chain stores,..speed shops maybe too. Even for things you may have a dealer/mechanic do having a workshop manual will help you know your Ranger better anyway. I was surprised that here Royal Purple is about the same price as the Mobil 1 I had been using. You may want to get an air-filter that never needs replacing like a K&N...be careful with oiling them though or you'll be cleaning your MAF sensor. A new one shouldn't need oiling..you do that when you clean it which can be a long time if you seldom drive in dusty conditions. The factory manuals skip info on some simple things since a dealers mechanics don't need that. Make sure to order one covering your year.

I found this later genuine Ford Ranger workshop manuals (actual paper books)..2010 included. Notice the price of most. I imagine the few that are quite less are used.
