Default Speed limiter

Has anyone done anything about the speed limiter. I have an 04 XLT 2.3 and the limiter cuts on at 90 MPH. is it worth trying to do anything about it?

do you really go faster then 90? i say dont worry about it.. Better off having it cut off at 90 then at over 100 and end up killing your self

Only way to cancel it is with a tuner. Like JT said is there really a need to go over 90mph?

every 10 mph over 50 you double you chances of killing yourself.

slightly bigger tires will give you a little more top end

you may only get 10-12 more mph out of it

but the price for a full set of tires is about what a tuner would cost.....

Ok since this questions been resolved I have a related curiousity.
I'm under the impression that the rev limiter and speed limiter are one and the same process. In other words revs are limited according to calculated load, no load - the revs top out which prevents uncontrolled revving and also works to incidentally, albeit purposely, limit speed.

Or am I wrong; is there a whole separate proccess that takes info from the VSS and says 'ok we're at 92 mph that's it?' I just don't see the speed limiter as a static value since we used to have all these threads about what different speed our trucks cut out at.

They are separate. Speed limiter is based on speed. RPM limiter is based on RPM.

on most vehicles the rev limiter will kick in even if it is in gear. just go watch the races for the compact cars. they try to hit the rev limit just as they enter the turn.

the rev limiter just keeps the engine from going over a certain rpm no matter what.

What is the limit suppose to be for a 93 2.3l Ranger. I have heard it is suppose to be 95 but mine cuts out at 90. Is that what it is suppose to be or is something off there? How do you remove the limit on an OBD I system?

It's a 4 cylinder. How much faster are you really going to go after 90.

My ranger will run in fifth and still act like it wants to accelerate up until the wall of the speed limitor. The guy who owned it before me had some major work done on the engine and the drive train. I was just wondering because I also may be looking into re doing the truck for racing. But this would be my first computer integrated vehicle.

no offense but its a 4 banger. it will be very hard to get it faster than a stock 4.0L.

ps the manufacturers usually set the limiter depending on the tires that came on it originally. if they were rated for 95, then the limiter will prob be set at 90. i like to go fast too but people need to realize what a blow out will cause at high speeds and that most tires arent gonna handle speeds over 100.

A very good point that is not made to often (tires are a big factor when talking mph)

I see what you guys are saying. Every place locally i have checked for tires for my ranger have had a speed rating of S or T. Nothing Less. That was just what the truck called for. Those both are rated at 112 for S and 118 for T. So i just thought I would Let you guys know I have looked at tires. Thanks for all the advice
