Default 2010 4 cyl air filter replacement question....

2010 ford ranger 4 cyl 2.3L engine manual tranny.

Question:

when the time comes to change the air filter lets say in like 20K miles... how do you remove the air box lid when you have 2 hoses on top of the lid, one bigger one and one smaller one??? I already know how to unclip the lid, ive done it many different vehicless, what about the hoses on top?? do they simply carefully get out of the way or wut.....???

Also should I stick with motorcraft brand air filter or would a K&N drop in increase even a little HP or some MPG gain or its not even worth it to get a K&N drop in in the 4 cyl.... please honest real world been there done it opinions. Thanks guys....

Not sure of any hoses on the cover but unhooking the connector for the MAF sensor helps a little. K&N filters are pretty expensive. I doubt there is any significant power increase, if any, but what is nice about them is that they are reusable.

This is only on the 4cyl engines.. For some reason Ford Had a brain fart when they routed the A/C lines on top of the airfilter box.
But yes they do move out of the way somewhat. Be carefull when you move them as you dont want to damage them.

K & N drop in - not worth it. No difference. So what if it flows more air? Whatever extra air movement it might facilitate without resistance is beyond the the practical range of your engines actual needs anyhow. And that applies to quick acceleration and MPG factors.

Besides the maintenance - you clean it with solvent then re-oil it. How much oil is too much? You gotta either go over it with a decent power shop vac to draw out any possible extra oil or run the risk of you engine sucking it in past the MAF sensor.
I gotta Purolator pure one paper filter ready to take its place when it needs it.

So why did I buy one in the first place? I had the upgrade bug and didn't have my facts researched.

i have a K&N in my 06, i have had it for years (ever since i had the 01) the filter probally has been used for about 6 years, and oiled it about once, and never had an issue with it, the filter has i would say about 80,000 miles on it

This is off topic, but does anyone know why Ford switched to a sealed radiator/pressurized recovery tank with the Duratec 4-cyl?

my bad... the lines are routed just like the pic in this thread... exactly the same...

only thing that should of been thought out better is when you try to move the bigger hose out of the way the compressor looking black tank moves too.... so i guess i will have to be very careful. also this engine seems much more cramped with stufff compared to my old 94 4 cyl xlt with no AC....

how u guys get the duratec nname??

I'm fairly new here myself so I don't know where the Duratec name came from. Ford is my guess.

Post a pic for comparison. Could be a Monday thing. LOL! When I was at the dealership he showed me papers on two identical rangers but one was $300 more than the other one. He couldn't figure out why the different price and just said it could be due to the month it was built. I laughed and said you kiddin! He said no! LOL!

My Ranger was the 15,178 one off the assembly line.

The Duratec name is from Ford and it's just the family of engines

It includes:

1.3L
1.4L
1.6L
1.8L
2.0L
2.3L
2.5L
3.0L
3.5L
3.7L
and even 6.0L and the SHO

basically DOHC

You have 1 hose from the plastic coolant tank to the radiator and 1 a/c vapor line hose looped around the filter box. It doesn't require much mechanical knowledge to just move the hoses a tad to get the lid off. You can bend the a/c line a bit to get the filter out, just don't rip on it.
Are you the same guy that wanted to know what direction the oil would come out of the drain hole once removed??????
Common sense.

The manufacturers sometimes raise prices a small amount in the middle of a model year. $300 sounds about right.

Just unplug the maf wiring and remove the rubber hose from the airbox assembly. On mine I have to do some serious moving of the a/c line, yours is way more user friendly than mine. Don't know why Ford did it this way, but there has to be a logical reason.....been like this since 2001. According to Ford, the vapor line has to be a certain length for efficiency purposes.
