Default thermostat not opening? Even with new one?

My truck temperature was staying at a normal level level but there was some coolant on the side of the radiator and the upper hose felt very tight. A mechanic said the thermostat may be stuck and its spraying out the upper hose so he said to try the thermostat first. I ordered a beck arnley or watever for 12 dollars installed it today filled the radiator ran the track radiator open filled the reservoir replaced hte cap and let her idle. Temperature gauge never moved upper hose is still stupid tight and a little coolant on the side of radiator again. Does the gauge not moving correspond to the thermostat still not opening? Any ideas whats going on here. All connections were reconnected darker one to the front lighter to the back. Truck is a 1999 2.5L 5 spd. Thanks for any help

how do you know the thermostat is not opening? just bc the hose is tight? its going to be tight under pressure. where is the leak coming from on the side of the radiator? do you have water in your oil? are you losing coolant?

the guy at the shop told me the hose was under too much pressure, I felt the skeptical and assumed it was opening bc the hose was hot. The coolant i occasionally find is on the side of the radiator on the ribs of the tank about 4 inches below the hose, but its really random. But now with the new thermostat in i dont understand why my engine temp gauge doesnt come up. The clips are firmly connected and it moves a tiny bit when turning on and off.

i guess that would explain the temp gauge not reading anything reasonable. how can i test for this, and the coolant wasnt awful dirty or anything but idk. Wouldnt it be overheating if this was the case? It idled for a long time and has been driveable. As long as i add that little bit of coolant occasionally.

If the thermostat is stuck open, coolant will flow freely through the radiator and the engine will not warm up. The gauge will sit down on cold all the time.

If the thermostat is stuck closed, the engine will warm up, keep warming up, overheat, over pressurize, and blow shit up. It will be in pieces.

Your present symptom of not warming up fits a t-stat stuck open problem. And the leak is probably nothing more sinister than just a leak. You can't have a t-stat stuck closed and just have a little leak. You have pieces of engine all over the garage.

is it common for a brand new thermostat to get stuck open? I guess ill throw the old motorcraft back in and see if it changes back to reading normal temps. Stupid 12 dollar thermostat

No, but I suppose it could be installed wrong? Not sure if it can go any other way in your truck or not. I don't know why but it's not closing.

i put it in just like i removed the old thermostat. Spring and copper facing into the head and pointed aluminum ish top facing toward the thermostat housing. To my knowledge it wouldn't fit any other way.

the jiggler that is on the t-stat has to go towards the cab , in other words away from the front.
that is how I was always taught and I think it says that on a t-stat package.
I just don't know why except to help get the air out of the system

yes and for the rangers it has these circlips outside of the jiggler that somewhat hold it in the housing and face the head. I think what has happened is i was right initially saying that my radiator leaks. Specially now after sitting for 2 days i say it dripping from the same spot away from the hose. And that changing the thermostat was a waste of time because mine was actually fine. And beck arneley must have given me a bad thermostat thats stuck open.
Thats the only reason i can see that my temperature was where it should be minus the slow leak, and now it wont warm up after 10-15 minutes of idling

Yep. See, never over-anylize these problems. If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and flies like a duck, it is probably just a duck. Or in this case, a leak.

had a similar problem when i used a tstat from AZ or napa cant remember where. it might have been the same one you had. Did it have a weird separate gasket with it?(it's junk). get the Mororcraft. #F8CZ-8575-AA( I have heard some people got the Stant to work in the 2.3/2.5.) The tstat you got might have been a lower temp ie. 180. when you install the tstat it is suppose to sit in the housing the correct way. you should have to twist it into the housing to lock it properly. if it is not sitting in the housing properly the coolant will bypass it. The other reason you want the MC is because it has the bleeder hole in it that allows the system to bleed the air out. I dont know if the stant has the bleeder hole.
