Question 2.5L sputters while accelerating

Hello everyone! This is my first post here, I'm hoping someone here will have some insight on my problem.

My truck recently started sputtering while trying to accelerate, it runs fine at idle and at high RPMs. Had an error code of "Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected, Large Leak."

I replaced the fuel filter (lots of bad ugly stuff came out of it) and cleared the code. The problem got better temporarily but it came back; the check engine light didn't come back on.

Just checked the fuel pressure and it holds steady at 60 PSI even while revving the engine.

I'm stumped.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Tim

Either you have a spark problem or an injector problem. The quickest and cheapest fix is to try a couple of bottles of fuel system cleaner. Pour a bottle in and fill the tank. Run the tank damn near empty and repeat. I like Chevron Techton (up to 20 gallons bottle), others like seafoam.

The advantage with seafoam is that you can suck 1/3 of the bottle into the intake through the vaccum line going to the brake booster on the master cylinder and put another 1/3 into the tank, thus cleaning both sides of the fuel system.

If neither of them work, take a look at your spark plugs and wires. If they check out, your distribution boxes that the spark plug wires connect to.

Let me know if any of this helps.

i have a 2.3l efi car misfire/sputter while accelerating. speed
doesn't matter, rpms 1-4000. no computer light!
Brought into ford service. day 1 misfire on cyl 1, day 2 misfire
on cyl 4. fuel psi good, injector flow test-passed twice. Manual
compression test passed.
They charge me 2 hrs on diag. can't tell me what's wrong.
Mech call engineers(hotline asst). they say swap fuel injs.
possible that inj passe test yet still causes misfire due to poor spray pattern. Ign test, running compression test, etc..
I've read of many ranger owners having problems like this. Ford
almost telling me I might have to replace all. Diags alone will
cost 1000's. very disappointed, if no engine light, they have no
clue. pretty sad! truck only has 73,000 miles, oil chg 3-4mos or 3-400 miles. taken care of religiously.

a few thoughts

1) see if you can get a scanner, even a cheap $30 code reader will do. try an catch a pending code. a pending code is one that comes on but goes off before the CEL comes on

2) your engine has a pvc hose/elbow that is a common failure. I believe it is toward the bottom driverside. I would think that it would throw a p0171 code but I still would check it.

3) the coilpack is set up in pairs. cyl 1 and 4 go together and 2 and 3 go together. The fact that you got a misfire code for 1 and 4 suggest to me a potential bad coilpack. you can test the resistance of the coilpack, however the resistance can test out fine and still be bad

----------

I also would clean the MAF and change the sparkplugs if they have not been done recently. use only autolite or motorcraft.....

I would not go back to the dealer....there are plenty of good local mechanics.....I think there is a place in arlington called dudley auto? I think they are honest......if you have any skills at all. it sounds like you change the fuel filter yourself......you should be able to take care of this issue......I also would check the airfilter and the air intake for blockage...as sgtsandman suggested run the Techron in the tank.....if you use seafoam in the brakeline do the seafoam before you change the plugs.also clean out the throttle body with throttle body cleaner make sure the butterfly valve is working....please do the other things we suggested....other then the coilpack the rest are maintenance issue.......I also would invest in the scanner........if you have a android device some people have had luck buying the obd bluetooth adapter(elm 327) for $20 and using the free version of Torque or Torque pro for $5

I actually had coil pk and wires put in awhile ago,
car ran fine. dealer swapped them out, said not the problem.
I go to arl motor mart, great shop. I had in dealer for recall
issue. figured w/out engine light on they'd have more experience.
Oil chg due early next month, i'll talk to my guy about ideas you
have shared.
