Default someone please answer this question about power steering.

i would really appreciate if someone could answer my question. i have a 96 4cyl 5speed with no power steering. i also have a 97 4cyl 5speed (parts truck) with power steering. could someone please tell me if i can put the power steering in my 96. and if so, what all needs to be transplanted? a walk through would be so awesome.. but yes/no is better than nothing

thank you very very much

It should be pretty straight forward. My chevy and your ranger share the same style steering setups. I swapped to power in my chev. You'd need the correct engine type power steering pump and bracketry, the power steering gearbox, and obviously the pressure and return hoses.

Looks like both donor trucks are 2.3 2wd's, so your swap should be cake. Unbolt the old box, bolt on the new, bolt on the pump and get your new belt, done!

both trucks are identical motors and trans. i just dont really know exactly what needs to be done. it sounds simple enough but i would like to hear from someone who has done the exact same thing, before i go ripping things apart know what i mean? thanks a lot though i am starting to feel more comfortable about the swap.

yesss thank you wesvo. that is what i wanted to hear. do you know of anywhere i could find a step-by-step? i can probably do the work myself, i just need to know what im doing. i havent really been able to find much information on the actual process. i could just study the existing set up as it is, then swap it, but theres always room for error that way.

Out of curiosity, does your truck without power steering have an idler pulley where the p/s pump would be? I'd like to put one on another 2.3 I have and don't have many vehicles to pull from in the junk yard.

As for your swap, everything should go together fine. First things I would check is that all the mounting holes are present on your truck, and that you don't have to swap the entire steering columns.

Power steering was made standard for all Rangers in 1989. If yours doesn't have it, someone must have removed it.

You sure about that??? Why is it that my old yard truck and an old close buddy owned a 93-97 with no power assist anything but brakes?? Also why is it that I can buy a replacement manual steering gear for those trucks and this thread's OP's truck then?????

i dont think that is accurate. in the owners manual it says something like "power steering (if equipped) blah blah blah". pretty sure it is an option. it could be that as of 89 it was standard on certain trim levels

If you go to AutoZone.com register or log in its free load your vehicle and search under repair steering it will show you pictures and give instructions on replacing the steering gear. Remember you will have to view both manual and power steering articles.Download and print so you'll have a quick and handy reference. Good luck.
