Default 2000 Ranger wont start ;(

Hello all,
I have a 2000 Ranger 4 cyl 110,000 miles
has been running fine.
Went to start it this morning (outside temp in the mid 40s)
it would crank over and had fuel pressure at the end of the rail
tried starting fluid just to be sure , would not fire.
looked at a few connections to see any chaffed or broken wires
waited a few hours (outside temp now in the mid 50s)
Truck started up ??????????????????????????????
Heading to advanced auto to have them do computer scan.

a few thoughts to ponder. you have fp so I think that means your ecu relay is working. You dont have an ICM(it is part of the ecu). even if a coil was bad it still would have tried to fire( I think or does the truck just use one coil when first starting))?. I wonder if the crankshaft positioning senor is acting up? did you have spark? if the CPS is acting up could you still get fuel and spark?( the timing is off and thus will not fire).

Ok I had a battey load test done cks out ok
also alt. cks out ok
Had computer scan done no codes
This morning it started (rain and 55 degrees outside)
I did not check for spark but As I said I did put starting fluid in and it did not start.
I was thinking cam sensor?

if you check for spark and don't have one then you know that is the issue. if you do have a spark then we can assume a timing issue. I dont know f a bad cam sensor would keep it from starting. I thought that if the cam sensor was wacky the ecu gets the info from the crankshaft sensor. I thought the cam was for fine tuning the timing but I am not positive. I would invest in a scanner/codereader......what ever the budget allows. I bought my codekey for $20 at costcos(none left)........I have been able to catch pending codes that help diagnose the issues.

one thought i had was next time it happens disconnect the camshaft positioning sensor. I don't think it needs to be attached to run and if it is fubared it might be keeping it from starting.....I am not sure where it is located...

Before you do that just take a look at your battery terminals, mine did the same thing and they had a little corrosion that interfered with the contacts

Did it even attempt to turn over? If all it did was click a few times then it's got to be something electrical. My money is on the battery. Not working at 40F then working at 50F tells me that it may not have the proper cold cranking amps needed to start the truck.
