Default Engin problems 1993 2.3

Ok when i start my truck first thing is it takes me a few min. to get it started. when it starts it stumbles and you can smell the fumes from it running so rich. the check engine light will stay on. One time I just drove it anyways as I was late for work. After I drove for awhile the engine made a smnall sorta back fire with no pop and then it ran fine the check engine light went off as soon as this happened. So no everythime I start this truck this is what happens. seem like it takes longer to kick in than before. I still drive it everyday . I use to get about 24 mpg. Now in this condition I get 8 mpg. Iv tried to do the obd 1 reader to get the codes and the manual said when the fuel pump shuts off it will actualy start reading the codes. problem is the fuel pump does not shut off with key on. Please help these four kids are tired of eating ramine noodles for dinner cause dad is spending all the money on gas. Thanks Greg

might be the throttle position sensor.

I'm encountering the same issue .
It started about 18mo's ago . At first it would start cold just fine , but misfire on restart and kinda hicup a little ways down the road then run fine the rest of the trip . This got progressively worse in that it would take more miles for it to hicup each time . Now it has a hard time starting even when it's cold .

I figured out that there was no spark going to the intake plugs while running . From what I understand , only the exhaust plugs fire while cranking then once running all the plugs should fire. I had Autozone test my MID unit and it checked out fine . So I decided that it must be my crank sensor and replaced it.... no fix !! So I bought a new MID unit thinking that Autozone may have their head up their @$$ and still no fix . I have replaced coils , swapped coils , chaged plugs , new timing belt (rechecked cam timing twice) and now I'm stumped . I'm hoping that it is not the main brain or an electrical short somewhere in 20 miles of wiring ..

SOMEONE HAS HAD TO RUN IN TO THIS BEFORE !!!

Mine is fixed !!!!! It turns out that there is a high elevation plug on a few years of the 2.3 . Not a spark plug , but a electrical plug of some type . When I pick up my truck I will ask the tech for more details . It is probably a system for the ignition MAP like my KTM 300 dirtbike has. On my bike you can plug or unplug it to effect the power band . Or you can install a switch in the circuit to change it on the fly .

Anyways , it only cost me 98.00 including diagnostics !!!

I can't see how a TPS could have anything to do with backfiring. An bad O2 sensor would NOT causing backfiring or misfiring.

if all else fails try unplugin a senser at a time around the throttle body to troubleshut engine, include MAFS, if you scan agin chose scan with engine running make sure check engine light is on before scan.

checked and replaced coils , Crank angle , DIS module . The shop I sent it to can't get any codes to come up on any of their 4 readers (even though the check engine light is on ) . I don't see an O2 sensor causing the intake plugs not to fire ... I guess I'll try a main control unit next . It could be a short in a wire , but I don't understand why it bucks just before it starts to run fine ?

TRY AND REPLACE A TPS ON YOUR 93 RANGER 2.3. THE 2 SCREWS ARE HELD IN WITH THREADLOCKER. THEN THEY BROKE OFF AND HAD TO BUY A NEW THROTTLE BODY. I AM STILL RUNNING ON 2 OR 3 OR SOMETIMES 4 CYLINDERS....THIS OLD RANGER IS HEADED FOR THE BONEYARD. AFTER $1200 dollars IN PARTS LABOR AND FORD DEALERSHIP I JUST GAVE UP...I BOUGHT A 2011 CHEVY ...AT LEAST IT RUNS ON 8 CYLINDERS
