That's what I believe too is its not a interference engine. I think the book recommended "inspection" at 120k. That came out of the book that was in my 97. So I would say probably around 160k-170k maybe? Idk exactly when it should be replaced. I'm gonna be doing mine soon as well along with quite a few other things

Mine broke at 200,283 miles. I'd suggest around 150 if it still has the factory belt, or every 50 if it's been replaced. No parts are as good as Ford Ranger factory parts...for a Ranger anyway.

No. could be the fan-belt though.

Doesn't the owner's manual recommend a belt replacement time/mileage on the four cylinder?

Nope, only an inspection at something like 120,000 miles. I guess since it's a noninterference engine, they figure it's no big deal if the belt snaps.

Once the bolt is off, some light tapping on the side while pulling on the pulley is usually enough. Maybe wiggling it a little as it comes off may be necessary.

I know mine timing belt broke on my 94 2.3L 4 banger going down the highway at 70 mph. I just lost power to EVERYTHING!!!

But I was able to put a new belt on and it was fine, still running to this day (with a new owner of course)

Found a how to here:
http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_do_you...98_Ford_Ranger

and heres a utube vid on a 2.3....Im sure it all applies:

Looking at doing this soon on a 2.5L 4 banger (1998 145,000 mi)

But I dont think I will attempt this. The place I use for stuff I dont want to try wants $435, and thats with the kit that includes the tensioner replacement....that cost $115 alone.

for $435, they should be doing the timing belt, tensioner, AND water pump! at least that's what i think.
