Default Noisy Powersteering Pump?

Hey All,

I have a 1992 XLT supercab with a 2.3 and a 5-speed. Does anyone else have a super noisy powersteering pump? When I first got her I was surprised by how much it whines. I thought it was low and it was a little, but even full of fluid it is pretty noisy. This is my first Ranger and I wanted to know if anyone else knows if this is common? Thanks!

This is very common among ford vehicles. What you can try is jacking up the front of your truck, turning the wheel from lock-to-lock a couple times then see if there are any bubbles in your fluid resevoir. What you can also do is pull a vacuum on that resevoir, pulling out any air in the system, thus causing the level of fluid to drop down and need to be filled again. If all that fails, I haven't a clue what to do (which is where I stand right now, lol).

Talking Re: Noisy Powersteering Pump?

mines an 87 but ever since i changed the rubber flex hose line on the back of the pump think its the return for fluid it's been a little noisey when cranking wheels fast or all the way,i replaced just a regular 5/8in hose for like 50 cents but actual hose is a steel braided stretch line for like $15 its only 8inches long or so,but check that hose and see if it looks like a regular hose or braided,if braided check both ends to see if worn or split may never leak but you could be not getting enough vacume or air in system without a leak of fluid,if regular hose not braided check parts store see if it calls for a steel braided line change it may fix noise.
