Default Update PCM for new coil pack?

Hello everyone I was having some issues with my truck and I was told by the mechanic that I have a misfire and since I replaced my wires and plugs recently that is it probably the coil pack. However he said that he has to update the pcm with the new part number in order for it to work. Is this correct?

Thanks

Thanks for the quick reply. I was pretty sure you didn't need to and they wanted $460 to clean the MAF, replace the coil pack and reprogram the pcm

First things first, get a new mechanic. This one is a lying piece of shit. There is no such thing as updating or reprogramming the computer for different parts. Not on rangers, not on anything. Total lie. And $460 for the MAF? The can of cleaner costs $5 and it takes about 2 minutes. It is less involved than wiping bird shit off your window. Do not ever go back to that *******.

Yeah I was sure on everything else that he was lying to me about since I have cleaned my maf before, he also told me that my motorcraft brand spark plugs and wires that I bought are champion and some knock off brand.... I was also pretty sure on the fact that you didn't need to update the pcm for a new coil pack since all it does is basically throw spark. I don't let anyone work on my truck except for diag when it doesn't have a CEL.

Come on Matt - that's a little to broad a statement.

If you replaced a coilpack system with a coil on plug style, lets say with a higher voltage output. You could safely turn up the boost if:
1 - you weren't getting knock due to excessive boost
2 - you weren't getting knock due to excessive timing
3 - you weren't getting knock due to excessively lean mixtures
4 - you were getting "blow out" due to insufficient spark power.
