Default 1998 ranger 2.5 automatic shift collum problem

i just bought a 98 ranger. the automatic collum shifter is all messed up! it wont go over to park. it has to be on the N or drive to start. and it is loose as all hell. I heard that there is a shaft or stick on the transmission that could play a part in this? i have no idea what the problem could be?

I broke 2 shifter shafts. Found a thread on here with cable adjustment procedure and it is much better now. If the shaft fails on you, the cable will pop off the end of the shaft and you can change gear by pushing the cable in and out. Not easy, but crawling underneath to put it in gear was alittle too spooky for me.
