Default Evap Purge Valve

I got a 95 XL and my evap purge valve is faulty, I got a quote to have it replaced for $260 but I don't know if it's worth it. How essential is this part? If it is neccessary for me to change immediately is that quote fair or should I just try to replace it myself? I've been looking it up and I found the part for just $44. Any input would be nice, thanks!

rockauto.com has a Motorcraft "vapor canister purge valve" for $36 and if you take your time it might take you 2 minutes to change.

Current project: 2004 Ext Cab, 4WD, 4.0, Auto, 135k(purchase price $1,350)needs an engine. I think a timing chain skipped. No rust or dents, needs a compound. UPDATE: I bought a 4.0 out of a 2009 Ranger 4x4, 87k for $800 Just waiting to get the swap done.

where is it located? i smell gas coming from the bed/ tank and suspect the evaporator valve if it is located back there.

Don't know about you, but on my '97 it is right up front, driver side, and it has two vacuum lines running into it as well as an electrical connector...

Yep, should be up front, between the battery and the engine. Mine went bad and although I never smelled gas (mine stuck closed) it made my engine run ratty as hell. Picked my whole assembly up at the local Ford dealer (solenoid, and all hoses) for around $100. (Nobody locally carried them aftermarket, how strange). Replaced in about 5 mnutes. I would recommend replacing the hoses that got to and from the valve as well, mine were getting ready to rot away.

Edit: forgot to mention that the evaporative cannister is forward and below the battery tray, check the cannister out real good. a broken nipple or a cracked cannister could be causing your gas smell as well.
