Default 5 to 6 speed???

Hi guys,

I find the fifth gear to be reving high while I'm doing 60+, and when I'm on the motorway doing 70+ it's up to 3000+. I was thinking that if I could change the gearing for the fifth gear, or swap the gearbox for a six speed, it'd be less stressed when I'm doing the higher speeds. I've got a 2000 mile trip coming up and I'd love to find a fix by then??

I've got an x reg (2000), 2.5 turbo diesel.

Any advice??

go to a smaller gearing in the rear diff. something like a 3.27 or smaller, those sizes are better suited for highway driving. You will lose some torque if you do. That's the easiest way, the best would be an aftermarket tranny like your talking about.

you can also change out the overdrive gear in the tranny but you may have problems going up hills in overdrive due to being in a lower rpm, the price of that may not be too much more that regearing the rear end

yeah, the aftermarket trannie would be best but it would cost a lot so try to re-gear or invest in onthr bullet-proof ranger..

If you're doing so much highway driving that you feel it's worth the trouble, I'd say regear your axle(s).
