Default Clutch Hydraulics issue

So I don't drive a ranger. I'm sorry I like my F-250 and the rangers a little small. BUT my cousin has an 02 xlt with the 2.3 and a manual. He calls me the other day and says his clutch failed. I go out to pick him up and drag the truck back to the house, do a little checking and hmmm no fluid in the master cylinder reservoir.

So today we try filling and bleeding that. No dice. spongy pedal and doesn't release the clutch. Then we replace the master cylinder. Now we can't figure out how everything's back in there right, but all of a sudden there's dot 3 pouring out of the bottom of the transmission case.

Also, looking up through the little view port at where the slave meets the clutch there's a whole lot of shavings peeling off.

So 2 questions. 1) any ideas on what is causing the leak?
2)is the steel wool effect normal wear and tear or issues?

The slave cylinder is inside the bell housing. It sounds like it failed big time. The only way to change it is to drop the tranny.

agreed 100%

It sucks man the only way to do it is drop the tranny.
1998 Ford Ranger

147,000 on chassis, 50,000 on engine.
3.0 v6 5 speed 4x4...4x4 don't work lol

What I hope to do- Paint wheels, new head unit, exhaust, fix four wheel drive.
