Ok, this is like a mile of useless back and fourth because we aren't getting the full story the first time. Had you told us in post #1 that it will fire if you pop the clutch, that basically narrows down all your problems to one thing and this entire two month ordeal could have been avoided.

Don't make it more complicated than it needs to be. Stop, and think about this in a logical troubleshooting manner. Hell draw a flow chart i it helps.

What is the only thing different when you are starting the engine with the key vs popping the clutch?? THE KEY TURNED TO START.

When you have the key turned to START, it is applying power to the ignition on, accessory, and start circuits. If the key cylinder is fucked up, you can very easily have a bad contact resulting it no power being applied to the ignition on circuit while in the start position. So it will sit there cranking until the cows come home but nothing has any power so it isn't going to fire. Without the ignition-on power, you will have no spark, no fuel, no nothing. But the radio will work... that's on the accessory circuit. There are no relays or other fancy BS involved (at least none that are specific to being in the start position).

Next....

On my "94" 3.0 XLT....If I slightly turn my key, I hear my fuel pump prime. If I turn my key to the start position the starter will turn, then the engine starts. Prior to me cleaning my relay contacts, I would not hear my fuel pump prime and I knew it was not going to start.

I wanted to share this information with you all....I hope it helps ...this problem drove me crazy...LOL

Excuse me? First of all, I never said anyone was stupid. Second of all, YOU failed to properly describe the problem. And third, you made no mention of this vacuum leak until just now.

So based on everything you described, I'm not stupid, I'm right based on what you described, and I still probably know more than you. I don't blindly throw parts at the truck and stare it hoping it fixes itself. And you signature reinforces it, thank you very much.

And furthermore, next time you want help with a problem, go somewhere else you ungrateful ass. Calling people names that are helping you with your incompetence is not going to get you anywhere on here.

ok fire ranger i see your point buti did not call you stupid either. i made sure you were making sure you werent being stupid. and as you can see from my signature i have a cold air intake. and it actually works gasp!!!!. and i did not just throw parts at the truck i had a licensed mechanic look at it and that was what he decided it was. the vacum line was the last thing that was checked because noone thought of it leaking in the spot it did. and i dont think im the one with the problem with calling people names. quote fireranger. "ungrateful ass"

Well that's a laughable response. Backpedalling at it's worst. And calling you an ungrateful ass is not name calling. It's stating a fact.

are u talking about the timing belt when you say to spray a little starter fluid in it? and the spark do i just put the plug back into the wire and lay it on top of the metal part of the engine?

timing belt has nothing to do with it.....you can take 1/4 cup of gas or spray starter fluid and pour it into the throttle body if it fires at all you have spark and most likely a fuel issue....

was it running before you replaced the belt? did the belt break? if it was running then you must not have hooked everything back up correctly or you did not line it up right. did you have the crank key at 12:00 and did you have the marks on the cam correct. the marks can be hard to see. I think they are triangles that you are lining up. there might be 2 marks on the cam did you look close that they were the same....did they march up perfectly if they were off a little that means the cam needed to b rotated a full turn.

I'll start from where it started having problems.. I was leaving work, it started fine. driving down the road and it just died, just like you would turn off the key. Tow truck/mechanic showed up said that I was not getting any fuel and that it was the fuel pump. He offered to tow and fix it for $60 + the priceof the fuel pump($82.99). I did have to still pay for cause he didn't. Said it would take about 3 hours. would be ready the next day, this was a week and 2 days ago. Finally got the call that my truck was done but had another problem. The timing belt was broke. Had it towed again to my sons house and that is where it sits in his garage. New timing belt, new fuel pump, new crankshaft positioning sensor. full battery and still won't start. I'm going to try and line up the triangles again and see what what happens. what are the "indents" for on the pulleys? THANK YOU ALL for your postings on here. I wish ya'll knew how much they help. will let you know what happens.

I did have the crank key at 12. but i am thinking I lined up the wrong marks. Both pulleys have triangles and then they have like "indents". I'm going out right now and line up the other marks. Your right the triangles are hard to see you really have to look for them on mine, it's almost like they got wore off. Thank you again.. I'll be back..

Hi everyone.
I have a 2004 Ford Ranger 2.3. ever since I bought it about a year ago it would start up but idle really low around 500 rpms and shake a lot until you just tapped te gas pedal and it would go up to about 1500 for about 10 seconds than go back to normal again. I went to go start it the other day and it didnt start at all, it turns over and sounds like its trying to start and shakes a lot like it used to but it wont stay running. there are no codes in the system and it only has 56,000 miles on it. I pulled out the MAF sensor and it looks brand new so i didnt bother cleaning it, I also loked at the IAC and it says not to cleanit but it too looks fine. I have alldata online but thats useless until you know the problem. I checked the fuel pressure and it seems to be fine and the fuel pump turns on when you turn the key on as well so I dont think its a fuel problem. whenever I am done trying to start it I can smell a really strong gas odor in the garage so I assume its getting fuel. I checked thespark of one of the spark plugs I dont know if I shoul check them all, I figure if one isnt working it would run on the rest. i considered mabe the timing being out or the cam position sensor being broken but im not so sure about that. i also checked the Inertia control switch and it seems fine I pushed the reset button and I dont know if its supposed to click or something but it just pushed in and came back out again. I removed it as well and shook it, yo can hear something moving inside of it I hope its not broken. Any advice wold be greatly appreciated
Thank you
