Question screwdriver solenoid starting

97 ranger wont start. All chimes and lights come on, hear the fuel pump push, but nothing else. No turnover, crank or clicking.

Touching a screwdriver to the solenoid starts it easily. (My buddy recommends that you make sure the battery cables are tightly secured before you do this, btw)
We changed the solenoid, and it still won't start without the screwdriver.

Is there something we missed, or any reset buttons to push?

Could the new solenoid be bad?

There's an easy way to check the solenoid out, all it takes is a volt meter and a friend. Take the volt meter and stick one lead on the solenoid post that comes from the ignition switch (key), and the other to chassis ground, (the motor or body someplace will do). Then have your friend hit the key. If you don't hear a click then the solenoid is not even trying to work.

If you get no voltage at this point, then your problem lies between the battery and the ignition switch.

If you have voltage, and no click and no start, probably the solenoid is bad.

If you have voltage and hear a click, then you need to check for voltage at the terminal which runs from the solenoid to the starter.

If you have voltage there, then it's probably a starter problem.

If you don't have voltage there, then it's probably the solenoid.

You said you can start it easily by jumping battery voltage in to the solenoid output to the starter, so I doubt it is your starter.

Personally sounds like a bad solenoid, but the earlier tests will help you track it down.

Have fun!

Im having the same problem with my 97 ranger. so far I've replaced the battery, the positive terminal (was somewhat corroded) and the starter solenoid. When I try and start my truck I here one click come from near the solenoid and the a mechanical whirring sound for only about 2 seconds. If I take a screwdriver and strt it via the solenoid it will start right up. However in order to pass inspection, I need it to start with the key. everything else works find but it just won't start normally. I dont have a volt meter, I plan on getting one soon but Dont have the money yet. any ideas what the provlem might be?

Is your truck a manual or an automatic?

Have you tried putting the truck in neutral and starting it?

I'm leaning towards a neutral safety switch, or an ignition switch problem.

1) Where was the "solenoid" you replaced?

2) where is the "solenoid" you are using the "screwdriver" on?

Tw selenoid should be on the driver fender. Another question, do your trucks have alarms or anything in them? Cause that could cause it to not work. My alarm on my truck when it's armed kills the selenoid. It's just a though. I had to change mine though same problem ha to start with a screw driver, changed the selenoid and it was fixed. Then starter died lol. Idk it was just a thought
